A preacher's wife accused of murdering her husband testified Wednesday that she doesn't remember picking up the shotgun or pointing it at her husband, but she said she did not pull the trigger. She heard a "boom" as the shotgun fired, she said.
"Something went off," Mary Winkler said, crying on the witness stand.
She said she just wanted to talk to her husband, Matthew, when she went into their bedroom, but she was terrified. Her husband was physically and sexually abusive, she said. That day, she said, she just wanted to stop him from being so mean.
Her depiction of her marriage contrasts radically from the description by the prosecution, whose witnesses described Matthew Winkler as a good father and husband.
Matthew Winkler, 31, was found fatally shot in the parsonage where the family lived in March 2006. A day later, his wife was arrested on the Alabama coast 340 miles away, driving the family minivan with her three young daughters inside.
Earlier Wednesday, Mary Winkler testified her husband punched and kicked her, forced her to have sex she considered unnatural and refused to grant her a divorce.

This is the CoC pastor’s wife I was telling you about on the other thread.
Did she not consider just leaving?.....................
D-UH.
Now that she has hired a defense attorney she's saying that her husband beat her and raped her and that he was a pornography addict.
Interesting shift in her story.
"Something went off," Mary Winkler said..."
Ah, I see, the shot gun did it!
Free Mary Winkler!
Execute the shotgun!!!
Did she commit murder?
I don't think so.
Manslaughter 1.
If any part of her story were true, she might have.
Of course she did.
She had a motive to kill. The killing was premeditated. She killed him intentionally and then fled the scene after packing up for a long trip.
The mental illness thing is a ploy.
i thought i read that her “ugly came out” and did this....
What brand of shotgun did she pick-up? Was it a modified pump? I haven’t been following this story as you can tell.
I don’t know what to believe with this story. If she’s found “not guilty” I don’t know if I would trust her to be a safe around her children.
Hire a divorce lawyer and get a restraining order. Tennessee doesn't honor the "He needed killing" defense.
Second, I will wait until all the facts come out. I have seen some reports that she was involved in some sort of criminal activity.
She's using the "abusive husband" defense...and that first court appearance suggests that she might be telling the truth.
The more evidence this minister's wife has of abuse the more closely folks are likely to listen to her.No evidence...no "not guilty" verdict,IMO.
I thought I read somewhere that she was suspected of embezzling church funds...?
Didn’t I read somewhere not too long ago that she was “kiting” checks between two bank a/c’s and the banks had caught on and she was going to be exposed to her hubby?
