LANCASTER [California] - It took three sheriff's deputies, four gunshots and four shotgun blasts Friday to bring down a pit bull terrier on the west side of town. Residents of the 43500 block of Honeybee Lane, off Avenue K near 50th Street West, called the Lancaster Sheriff's Station about 5:30 p.m. complaining about a threatening dog.

When deputies arrived, the dog approached them, and Deputy Nathan Grimes sprayed it with pepper spray, according to a sheriff's report.

After being sprayed, the pit bull then charged Grimes, who shot the dog in the shoulder with his sidearm.

But the bullet didn't bring down the charging pit bull, and the dog turned around to threaten residents.

Deputy Michael Grijalva then shot the dog twice with a shotgun.

Those shots didn't deter the dog, either. and the pit bull turned back toward the officers. Grimes then shot it three more times with his sidearm.

After the dog turned back toward residents, deputies Grijalva and Michael Walth each shot the dog with their shotguns, finally bringing it down.

"If an animal is threatening residents or deputies in such a way that they're going to be attacked, they have a right to shoot it," said Sgt. Greg Minster of the Lancaster Sheriff's Station. "In this case, they did try to use the (pepper spray) first."

Minster said all eight rounds - four from regular duty weapons and four from shotguns - hit the pit bull.

"They're just all muscle," Minster said. "It just goes to show how dangerous those dogs are."

An automatic shotgun that requires no human operator, I am so there.

This dog withstood four bullets (9mm or .40 I'd bet) and four (12 gauge?) shotgun blasts...I would've thought either a .40 or a 12-gauge would've done the job in a shot or two. Shows how much I know.

I hear the King Cobra can be very effective in these circumstances.

I have 2 English Mastiffs next door to me. One weighs 200 lbs the other 180 lbs, sweet as angels, the owner keeps telling me. It would probably take this much fire power to bring one of them down.

There you PB Haters go again!

This wonderful American Breed brings its owners hours and hours of pleasure during those brief periods when they are at home and not incarcerated. Weighed against that tremendous social benefit, what's a few kids, pets, nosy neighbors, trigger-happy LEO's, and the odd mailman or two?

I demand fairness and balance on this issue.
