WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The prosecutor who removed himself from the Duke lacrosse sexual assault case has hired a well-known law firm to defend him against ethics charges before the North Carolina State Bar. Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong has retained Winston-Salem lawyers David Freedman and Dudley Witt, law partners known for defending lawyers facing professional misconduct charges. "Years ago, I just started helping out lawyers who got in trouble for various things," said Freedman, a 1982 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's law school. "I have a firm belief that you look out for your own." The state bar filed ethics charges against Nifong in December, accusing him of violating rules of professional conduct. The bar said Nifong made misleading and inflammatory remarks to the media about the lacrosse players. The punishment for ethics violations can range from admonishment to disbarment. Nifong filed rape charges against three lacrosse players in March, when a woman hired to perform as a stripper at a team party said she was raped. He has since dropped the rape charges after the accuser changed a key detail in her account. The three players still face sexual offense and kidnapping charges. All three strongly maintain their innocence. The bar's complaint cited dozens of remarks Nifong made to the media in the early days of the case that it said amounted to "improper commentary about the character, credibility and reputation of the accused." In one comment, Nifong referred to the defendants as "a bunch of hooligans."
Reade Seligman, Colin Finnerty and Dave Evans wouldn't happen to be 3 of your own, would they? 'Your own' only includes the scuzziest citizens, right, punk?

Have you seen this yet?
At a minimum, I hope he ends up flat broke and disbarred.
Naw, the lawyer will see to it that the county/ city pays him ROYALLY for the rest of his life.
And I bet they'll have to pay for his lawyers too.
you know 99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name.
And who is paying for their services? And lawyers - plural - yeah, he's gonna need a whole bunch of them.
Well ... I guess we really know how it works, then ... lawyers are judges, judges are lawyers, wink and a nod and a whole buncha' money.
And considering this bright bulb made such a statement ... I give Nifong about ... oh .... 1.5% of a chance he'll beat it.
Michael Jackson media circus all over again.
Looking out for their own is usually what state bar associations do.
You, David Freedman, just want to be a backup in case they don't, this time.
ITMT, I'm sure you'll also make sure Precious Mangum--gotta love that name!--'gets her day in court' over & over again, until a jury is found who can 'get it right'.
And you, skiddle_deboppop, have got it right: he's one of the lowest of the bottom feeders, out to protect all the scuzziest.
Sounds like this Law Firm hit on a bonanza.
Imagine having a prosecutor on speed dial.
He did this so that he would get elected. Prosecuting 3 white guys for raping a black thing was the only was he could get the black vote. That would push him over the edge. 3 more years and he qualifies for the pension. If Freda Black had won, she would've fired him and he would've lost that. HE NEEDS TO LOSE HIS PENSION. I wish I could be there to see that news delivered to him.
..to try and save himself even more embarrassment .
Perhaps NiFong's next move will be to Boulder.
And all along we thought it was all about Truth and Justice. Silly us.
Taxpayers might have to stand lawyers fees at the outset.
I'm not sure how it works...perhaps a knowledgeable
Freeper will know.
It is obvious that nyfong knows he screwed up....let us hope the bar assoc. hearing is open to the public. It'll be less likely for any "good ol' boy' stuff....
So at the beginning of the case Nifong asked why the lacrosse players would need lawyers if they had nothing to worry about ie. not guilty. Now the shoe is on the other foot and Nifong has to do the sensible action that he had previously belittled the lacrosse players for - hiring legal representation. It doesn't get more hypocritical than that.
To paraphrase Nifong himself, "If you didn't do anything wrong, why do you need a lawyer?"
LOL. I'm going to steal that line.
Maybe the citizens ought to protest when Nifong appears in public, vocally insisting that he be a man and just confess
Today (Monday) O'Reilly did a short segment about Duke. Their reporters contacted two professors at Duke who signed the gang of 88 letter, and one weaseled out of talking and the other refused to talk. They caught Nifong in his pajamas and he ordered them off the property and said that he would only discuss the case in court. It was heartwarming to watch.
