In the original article you will find that it isn't the lady who is pushing the issue. Apparently the guy basically despises his own family so much he wants to distance himself from them as much as possible. He also really loves her family so that is why he wants to change his name.
Then he found out he would have to pay about $300 to complete the process and decided to sue the state of California to force them to let him change his name for free like they allow newly married women to do.

I knew a couple who did this.
It was his second marriage - already had two sons by his first wife. His new wife was an only child and her father was also an only child.
They did it to keep her family name alive.
Everyone was happy.
