Is Satellite TV Worth it?

Posted on 10/22/2006 9:07:17 PM PDT by hsmomx3

While thinking of ways I can save a little bit of money, is it really worth it to switch from Cox Expanded Cable which costs $40 per month to DISH for about $25 per month?

We watch very few channels and feel that we might be able to get a better deal than what we currently have.

Your opinions on DISH would be appreciated.

DISH is very good in my view. However, if you're like me, you aren't as interested in what's on as you are in what else is on. DISH can be annoying to channel surfers.

Fox News has to be in our home, the kids watch some stuff on Disney and Nick, and we like ESPN and AMC.....could do without the MTV stuff.

I have DISH, but the basic package didn't give me FOX and other stations I wanted .. I pay 48 bucks or something like that.

They know how to get you.

All cable or satellite companies should let people pick what channels they want instead of making you pay for some of there channels : water, lime,{No kidding these are channels} 12 shopping channels etc. then from 1-8A.M. the majority of them go to paid programming. don't know why we should pay for channels trying to sell us something!

If you got kids and you want to watch FOX News and they'd rather watch kids programs, you're better off getting the multi-receiver plan, where you can have up to 4 receivers in the same house, all under one bill.

There is a DISH special on right now for $19.99 which only gives you a limited number of channels and Fox News Channel is one of those channels.

DISH Network started a free preview of the local channels and I'm not too impressed with it. The local channels offered here are only PBS, NBC and ABC, and the ABC channel shows paid advertising during the DAY.

They're free til the end of the year, after that we start paying for them, and I am going to talk to DISH and tell them to take those locals off my account. I ain't paying to watch paid advertising and not be able to watch pro football (no FOX or CBS).

I believe that is the "Family Plan". Which is basically the news channels (for the grown ups), but it focuses mostly on the kids channels. This was mandated by the government, and both cable and satellite providers must provide a "family" tier of channels.

What gets me steamed is you have to pay $ 4.95 for every box you have and you have to have the box!

I have the "America's Top 120" package, plus the Denver, New York and Los Angeles locals. I pay annually, so my bill is roughly less than $500 a year.

That's because your "leasing" the box from DISH directly. If you bought it from a local dealer, you can avoid that fee.

DirecTV is the same way. My aunt and uncle are DirecTV customers. They have 2 boxes, and one box goes from the house to the RV when they go on the road for 6 months, yet the box sitting at home not getting used is still getting socked with a lease fee of about $5 a month.

I own all my boxes.....Thats what i do not under stand....i 've had dish for 10 years and always buy the box from local dealers in my county. Same with my parents, they make them pay a monthly fee. It's crazy!

Yeah, that's not right. My box is leased. I migrated from a large backyard dish to DISH Network back in July 1998 and the company I subscribed to with the big dish gave me an incentive to migrate to DISH Network, as they were going out of business, and one of the incentives was a free dish, box, and install. The dish and the install were FREE, but I later found out about the stupid lease fee, which I understand totally, since I leased it from DISH directly as the equipment came from their Denver office.

Well, why not save the whole $40 a month by ditching the accursed contraption [aka TV] altogether? Remember: every stupidity watched on TV lowers the viewer's IQ by some fraction of a point. You might even get something for your old TV, at worst donate it to wreak its damage on some drooling idiot [whom it would serve right, BTW] and get the tax deduction. I got rid of my TV in '88 and have never felt any worse for it.

If I had the $$$, I'd make a cable company that charged by the channel.

I know, it'd never happen, but it'd be nice.
The Choice Cable Company.

Yeah, there is no CNN or MSNBC, only FNC on this package.

LOL!  That might be a good thing!

Just looked at their webpage, and it is indeed the Dish Family package

That package looks more enticing than the one I subscribe to (America's Top 120), which is $20.00 more.  Heck, DIY isn't even in my package!  The only thing I would probably miss would be the Sirius Satellite music channels.
