"Casey DID join the PGA Tour BEFORE the 2004 Ryder Cup and BEFORE his anti-American comments"
Oh, you are correct. I had the date of him joining the tour correct but for some reason was dating his comments to 2002.
As I said though, he apologised for the comments, is on record as to the fact that they caused him some problems, but that was his own fault. He seems to have put that all behind him now. I don't really see the mileage in you continuing to bash him for the incident.
Canard,
The reason it's still relevant is because WHAT he said is not something that you can truly apologize for...a person doesn't say something like THAT unless it's what's truly in his heart. So in essence, he is apologizing for GIVING offense, not for his beliefs.
For example, if someone asked me about my feelings about England, I wouldn't say, "God, Brits are so annoying, I hate them, etc, etc..." BUT...I might say, "You know, I really love England and have nothing but the highest respect for British culture, which is why it has been so disappointing and so disconcerting to see the emergence of so much anti-American sentiment in England."
Do you see the difference? What I said MIGHT be offensive to some people if they chose to focus on the wrong interpretation...what Casey said was something that cannot be misinterpreted unless he made it very clear at some point that he was joking...which was only his "spin" after he realized that it wasn't as "politically correct" as he thought to be anti-American. Poor Casey, like so many Euros, is so used to anti-Americanism that they are genuinely confused when they are called to task for it.
But I will just say one thing on him. To you MarkDel, get used to seeing Casey's face and game........ he's a great player and a good guy. And he's very fit.
As I did earlier in this thread...I will readily concede that Casey is a TREMENDOUS player. In my humble opinion, he has the game and physical talent to be a legitimate challenger to Tiger Woods as the best player in the World. So I have already "gotten used to the idea" of seeing Casey on a regular basis, but for me, every time I watch the guy, no matter how great he plays, there's a little voice in the back of my mind saying, "Yeah, but he's one of THEM." And by "them" I do NOT mean Brits or Euros, I mean one of the mindless left wing drones who has convinced themselves that the United States is the root of all political and cultural evil in the World. So for me, I'll never like and respect Casey in the same I would Nick Faldo or Tony Jacklin, or someone like that. I had the same reaction when I found out that American golfer Brad Faxon was a big leftist and huge contributor to the Democratic Party.
But as for Casey's talent as a Golfer, I think he has the talent to be the best in the World, though I personally feel Luke Donald has the better "head" to achieve that level of success.
By the way, I just realized there is a typographic error in my last post to you. I left out the word "way" in reference to Nick Faldo and Tony Jacklin, and by doing so, my intent could be misconstrued as to be saying something negative about those two. It is quite the opposite...I love Faldo and Jacklin, for very different reasons, and was trying to use them as examples of British players who I hold in very high esteem as people...as opposed to Paul Casey.
What exactly did he say to make you feel that way?
Have you ever seen some of Luke Donald's paintings? He is a fantastic artist. I would bet that in 100 years he will be remembered for his art much more than for his golf.
He is so gifted.
