Why did you make illegal a keyword? Because we might not know that it's illegal to kill a Houston cop, or because you have reason to believe an illegal alien did the shooting?

"Officer fatally shot by suspect in patrol car"

(9/21/06 - KTRK/HOUSTON) -
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The male was handcuffed and placed in the back seat of Johnson's patrol car. Somehow, the suspect shot Officer Johnson as he sat in the front seat of the vehicle. Johnson was able to push an emergency button, alerting dispatch.

Officers arrived at the scene to find the suspect still sitting in the patrol car. He was still handcuffed. A weapon was recovered at the scene. The man was taken into custody.

Officer Johnson was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He is survived by his wife, Joselyn Johnson, who is also a member of the HPD force. The couple have five children, ages 14 to 19.

Officer Johnson was 40 years old. He was a 12 year veteran of the force. Before becoming an officer, he was a jailer.

The suspect is described as an Hispanic male, about 32 years old. He is in police custody, but they have not been able to verify his identity."

I listened and watched while that was going on, from when they took him to the hospital until when the reporter said she was allowed to say that he had died, which she had already known but didn't want to broadcast.

Perhaps at 10PM, the news will tell more - it sounded like the bad guy had hidden a gun somewhere on his person that wasn't found in a pat-down and started shooting from the back seat of the cruiser. (Remember, this happened before, too!)

He shot the officer "numerous times" in the head. Last I saw, the perp, in dreadlocks, was shaking his head back and forth "No!" when detectives tried to question him. He was hog-tied at the time.

It's deja vu all over again.........same thing happened in Houston about 12 years ago. An officer didn't pat the suspect down good enough and he was shot from behind while transporting the perp. So sad. My sympathies to his wife and children.

The last I heard on the news tonight was that there had been a woman in the truck with the man who was handcuffed in the patrol car when officer Johnson was shot.

She "left the scene" and they were speculating as to whose gun it was that was found at the scene and whether the male perp actually did the shooting. An earwitness in a nearby house heard three loud shots.

The slain officer's wife is also an HPD officer, as is his cousin. He leaves 5 children, 14 thru 19.

It has since been reported that he was illegal, so the keyword is correct.

I heard it on the radio in the car, so I came home and looked at the Chronicle article. It's really sad. I would have put the odds fairly high that it was an illegal. That or a La. evacuee.

I finally saw the perp on the news tonight, from his court appearance. The dreads that another reporter said he saw weren't dreads, just long greasy hair that was swinging when he shook his head "no" each time.

Oh, yeah, a real winner. It was his wife's 9mm pistol and he had it in his waistband, under 2-3 layers of shirts. The other cops think he might have been able to bring his handcuffed hands down behind his back and around his legs to get his hands in front of him.

They also said a 9mm is real flat and under those layers, it would be very easy to miss in a patdown.

A wrecker driver had come along before the back-ups got there and the perp fired at him, too, but missed. Perp's wife is a security guard and it was her gun. TV reporter just talked to her while she hid behind her front door - they disguised her voice - and she is very upset that it was her gun that killed the officer.

Why'd she give it to the perp in the first place, then? I was going to guess K-person after hearing about the dreads, but illegal is correct - and no dreads.

They said he was deported in 1999 and sneaked back across "to visit family." (That apparently makes it OK?) No crimes until 2004, IIRC. They want to know where he was in between.

As it turned out, the shooter was an illegal alien, one who had already been deported back to Mexico once before, but came back.

I should have entered the keyword illegalalien.

This murderer won't be going anywhere this time, except straight to hell, by way of TDOJ.
