Father Takes Newborn Hostage In Appleton Hospital

(AP) APPLETON -- A 25-year-old man was arrested early Wednesday after taking his newborn child hostage, requesting time alone with the infant before he was arrested on outstanding warrants.

Shortly after midnight, 25-year-old Sherman Kapp came to visit his newborn son and the child's mother at St. Elizabeth Hospital.

The mother welcomed Kapp as a visitor, but soon, the hospital staff say, the visit took an ugly turn when Kapp became agitated and refused to unhand the baby.

The Appleton Police Department said negotiators spent more than one hour with Kapp in the birthing room at St. Elizabeth's Hospital starting around 3 a.m.

The unarmed man held the baby boy in the corner of the room, but eventually handed the child to his mother when negotiators convinced Kapp that the baby needed to be feed.

Kapp was then taken into custody, but not without a fight. Officers used a tazer gun to subdue him.

Kapp has a lengthy criminal record including convictions of shoplifting, disorderly conduct and possession of marijuana. In April, he was convicted of two counts of felony bail jumping. With a probation parole warrant out for his arrest, police say that is why Kapp would not release his baby son.

The infant, who was born Tuesday, was returned to his mother after medical staff checked his vitals, which is customary for newborns, Holdorf said.

Sherman Kapp, from Appleton, was treated for some injuries and then taken to Outagamie County Jail on the two outstanding warrants.

The district attorney was reviewing charges, including disorderly conduct and hostage taking, Holdorf said.

I'm waiting for the FR father's rights extremists to get on this thread and start whining about the mother and the police.

Oh, my. Didn't this mother choose an exemplary sperm donor!?

If I were the mother, I would be thinking ...what if this apple [infant] does not fall far from the recently arrested tree ... ?

How sad.

As much as I hate to admit it, I agree with you about genetics. I have a cousin who had two male children, three years apart in age. The older was fathered by a very troubled man. He was a fighter, literally and figuratively, always in and out of trouble. The younger son's father was a mild-mannered gent. Sweet and gentle. Both boys never knew their fathers. (long story). My cousin married the mother when the boys were still very young, (under 6 years old). So they had the same exact upbringing.

The bottom line is the older boy was ALWAYS in and out of trouble. The younger boy, an examplary young man. He's 45 years old now, and still a wonderful man....Deacon at his church.

The older boy? Killed by police during a high-speed chase about 17 years ago. Go figure.

When are men going to learn that they have as much to lose as mothers. They need to keep their pants buttoned until the "I do." Marriage is not only a benefit to women.

Admittedly, Hildy, you and I seldom agree ... but ... I would hate to admit that I were so narrow/closed minded that I could not admit when someone else is right! I try to comment when I see one of your posts with which I agree.

My dearly loved grandmother always used to say that even a blind hog finds an acorn now and again.     LOL

Ain't that just the way of life? Huh? Ain't it just the way for a Deacon to arise and smote his brother's pesky ways? Almost seems like destiny, played her angelic part. Great post Hildy- you should be prouder than a coldwater butter.
