Need computer help: Windows XP driver problem

Posted on 09/10/2006 12:06:39 AM PDT by GB

Brother Freepers, you've given me computer help in the past, I'd appreciate it if anyone who's fluent in Windows XP could help me out with this current issue.

While I was at work tonight, my wife called me in a frenzy to let me know what was happening ... our Dell computer, two months old, running Windows XP Media, gave the blue screen of death and did an IRQL-NOT-LESS-OR-EQUAL error and a physical memory dump. This happened spontaneously while my 8-year-old was on the computer playing Solitaire.

My wife did write down what appeared on the screen before she shut the computer down. It said:

STOP: 0x000000D1 (OxOOOOOOOC, Ox00000002, Ox00000000, 0xAA650F21) Portcls.sys -- Address AA650F21, base at AA650000, DateStamp 4057e49.

I am aware this is a driver problem.

I need some advice as to how to troubleshoot this driver problem, as in how should I go about tracking down and repairing what is wrong?

FYI, I did download some new software to the computer night before last, a boxing game called Title Bout. It has substantial bells and whistles and graphics, etc., although as I noted my son was playing the regular Solitaire game that comes with Windows XP. Do I need to uninstall that boxing game?

Also, I have had problems in the past week with Norton Ghost, which came installed on my system for a trial run. Short version, the software stopped making recovery points because it thought the backup area of my hard drive was full but it isn't, and it was causing problems with me trying to boot my system up, I know that was it because it's absolutely the only variable that had changed on my system. I contacted Symantec on that and did what they told me to, and I'm no longer having the bootup problems but the software is still not working like it is supposed to, it's not creating any recovery points at all because it thinks the backup part of my hard drive is full when it's not. I'm about ready to uninstall that, but could this be contributing to my problems?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Can you still use the regular old Windows Restore function? If so I would go back in time ..... optimum to go back before you ever installed Ghost

The prtcls error is an audio card issue. Windows XP is having problems loading or initializing the sound card on boot up. Shut the system down, yank the card, boot the system, Windows will then ignore the sound card drivers upon boot up. See if Windows XP comes up ok.

So either move whatever is sharing with this particular device inside your tower, upgrade or downgrade the driver set and hope that the problem goes away. The best way to see if there is something conflicting is probably to use control panel --> system--> hardware --> device manager --> go view and select 'devices by connection'...if any irq numbers listed match with this particualr device/the device doesn't show up correctly etc you know you have a problem.  Sometimes it's as easy as moving the device to a different slot, whereupon Windows will detect it, and use the drivers that worked, that are still located in the drivers folder.

I don't know if this is relevant, but both Dell and Gateway have, on occasion, distributed propriatary versions of audio and video cards that cannot use the drivers from Windows Update. This is why Windows Update never updates drivers unless you specificaly select them. The problem is, some people will choose them without knowing the consequenses, or knowing how to recover. You can always boot in safe Mode and revert the drivers.

Here is some advise, Uninstall any or all of Nortons software on your computer, either the Norton ghost, virus scan, or firewall.
Let windows make a restore point for your computer.

Didn't install Ghost, a trial version came with the system. I'd be happy to lose it, Windows Restore has always worked well for me. I used to be a Norton's fan, my last few experiences with their products have not been very good. I currently use NOD32 antivirus, it's pricey but for performance I'd recommend it to anyone in the strongest possible terms.

Followup, the computer is working fine now. I don't have time to research the issue right now, am about to be out the door for church, I'll check back later.

My first thought, however, is to lose the boxing game ... which I hate because it's one of the best sports games I've ever played, just incredible, I was absolutely going to buy it after the trial period expired, they have a troubleshooting forum on the site where I got it from, maybe I can run this past them and come up with a fix and try downloading it again ... and go ahead and lose Ghost which I'm not going to purchase after the trial runs out, and then go back to a Windows System Restore point before I started having trouble.

98SE? What the heck is that? Is that like a record or an 8 track tape? My granfather use to have a rotary phone... is 98SE like that?

Perhaps you can name a desktop operating system that won't fold up and die in the face of a bad device driver.

One step below ... what more does one need on the information highway than the ability to search it out and read/copy it?

Windows has some issues with their driver architecture which make crashes more likely, like putting the video drivers in kernel space. Perhaps Microsoft will finally address some of those design problems in Vista?

Have you noticed that the number of Windows problem reports are increasing on this forum lately? It seems like requests for help in recovering from Windows catastrophes are becoming more frequent. In the last few days, we've seen -

Anybody know "spaxebg.exe"?

[Vanity]Trojan removal help INTCODEC-V6.766[1].EXE, with circumstances

Need computer help: Windows XP driver problem

- and so on. In many cases, we don't see any report that the problem was resolved, except draconian suggestions like reformatting the hard drive. Evidently, Windows deteriorates with usage over time.
