I imagine he is being treated the way he is in an effort to "loosen" his tongue. The more he talks, the more the cops know.

Years ago I was involved in an investigation of a particularly brutal multiple homicide. We had a "drifter" who we thought might be our man, but didn't have enough to charge him.
