After almost three months in the Intensive Care Unit of Penn's George D. Widener Hospital, classic winner Barbaro has begun brief outings to some grassy areas adjacent to the ICU to hand graze. "We felt he was ready for a change of scenery, so last week we took him outside to pick his own grass," said Dr. Dean Richardson, chief of surgery. "He's not outside for a long time, but it's enough to let him enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. If he remains this comfortable, he will be hand-grazed daily."
"I'm very pleased with his progress," Richardson said of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner who was injured in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I). "His appetite remains strong, he sleeps well, and we continue to monitor him closely. He is measurably gaining weight and his overall attitude is great."

Thanks Rte66. Thought this news deserved its own thread.
Ping.
Wow, even a picture! Thanks for the ping.
That's great news! Thanks!!!
hurray for good news!! I was wondering how he was doing just the other day. Thank you so much for posting this.
Many thanks for this post. The photo warms my heart.
After all the money spent, they better hope he doesn't turn out to be gay!
Duel Classic winner War Emblem, on the other hand, has been under-performing: "Shadai Stallion Station tried to show more than 100 mares to War Emblem this year, but he covered only one, and that mare is not in foal..."
Hmmmm...

Good news!
More happy news! It makes me feel good.
Continued good news for Barbaro, I hope.
Thank you, thank you. Yes, it certainly did.
Did you see the video? I awoke to that on GMA this morning - total surprise, as I had not been reading the Woolley blog that said B got "out and about" on Saturday.
I'll come back with the link to put it on here.
Here's the video - I don't have a working player on my puter, so I haven't seen them online - just on TV. Don't know if the one on the Hospital's site is the same as the one on GMA.

*Strike a pose, Bobby! Put your best foot forward!*
They are different. Penn video better of the two.
Thanks for the links.
Quote from owner--"That's the first time he's been outside since we brought him in," said Gretchen Jackson, who bred and campaigned Barbaro along with her husband, Roy, in the name of their Lael Stables. "Dean took him out, and he just stood there for easily five minutes, looking at the scenery like, 'Oh my God, I'd forgotten about all of this.' He just looked around for some time before he put his head down, and then he ate away and was probably out for a good 20 minutes, enjoying himself. It was just the nurses out there and maybe a few vets and I think there were quite a few tears shed to see him do that."
