Again, Stanford Band must face the music

Troupe known for wild antics suspended as university investigates vandalism of 'Shak'

The infamous Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band is in trouble again -- this time for allegedly vandalizing its own "Band Shak."

Stanford suspended the band after discovering that the aptly named Shak had been trashed shortly after the band moved into a new $2.8 million home.

Between $30,000 and $50,000 in damage was done to the on-campus trailer near Encina Hall that has served as the band's temporary home for the past four years, according to the university. Walls and windows were broken, and profanities were spray-painted on the walls.

University officials believe band members were involved in the vandalism, which occurred between July 17 and 18, Stanford Communications Director Alan Acosta said in a statement. The entire band was suspended July 19 pending the outcome of a university investigation.

The band has long marched to its own drummer. Antics have variously embarrassed university administrators, outraged rival schools and bemused fans. The band once was suspended for urinating on the football field, among other indiscretions that have taunted rivals.

Normally, the 150-member band would be tuning up for a new school year now. This year holds special significance because the christening of Stanford's brand-new stadium -- with the home-opener football game against Navy -- is just six weeks away. The band starts recruiting freshmen around the same time.

"People are bummed out," . . .

At least they know they can buy pot from their teachers! Looking at this I'd say they can get crack from their band director!
