Cabbie lets backseat driver have it By Dan Baer/ Malden Observer Friday, August 4, 2006 - Updated: 09:47 AM EST

Usually it’s the cabbies who fear being attacked and robbed, but now a Revere cab driver is accused of attacking and robbing his fare after a dispute over their route escalated out of control, police said. “It looks like the cab driver just became agitated, pulled over the car and attacked him,” said Lt. Tom Swanson. “It is definitely something that you don’t see every day.” The unnamed fare called the Yellow Cab Company of Revere just before midnight on July 29 for a ride. But the fare told cops that the cabbie took a wrong turn and wouldn’t respond when he tried to get him to turn around. The fare told cops he was afraid he was being kidnapped and confronted the driver again. According to the police report, the driver responded with an expletive-filled rant, threatening him with violence if he did not keep his mouth shut. When the victim pulled out his cell phone to call police, the driver again threatened him and slammed on the brakes on a dark road. The fare told cops that the driver then pulled him from the car by his neck, threw him on the ground and after a small scuffle, stole the man’s cell phone and sped away. Police tracked down driver Abderrahim Lasba, 27, of Winthrop, after the fare gave them the driver’s taxi identification number. Lasba was charged with unarmed robbery and intimidation of a witness, police said.

The driver was probably African. They drive like bats out of hell, and in addition, the photo on the hack license looks nothing like the person actually driving your cab. One of my most terrifying rides in New York was with an African driver who went berserk, ran every light up Madison, was going about 60 - and wouldn't stop when we told him to stop. Finally he reached traffic he couldn't get around and we threw money on the front seat, opened the door, got out and ran for our lives.

The driver was probably African.

Yup. Most of them here in Columbus are Sub-Saharan.

Abderrahim Lasba, also likely a Muslim.

This is how it starts, with the Cabbies!

The YELLOW CAB FATWA!!!!LOL.

A minority of people refuse to enter a cab with anyone who is apparently Muslim these days. Bigots!!! ( sarc.)

I think the Africans probably don't have roads and stop lights in their native land, and when they get here, the concept is totally unfamiliar to them. And of course since they're all driving under a hack license gotten by somebody generations ago who actually managed to pass the test and get a driver's license, nobody ever finds out until the fatal accident.

"Police tracked down driver Abderrahim Lasba" - has anyone check his immigration status.

LOL.

Sounds like my first trip to Philadelphia... the cabby scared the crap out of me. Fortunately it was a short visit and the locals from my company handled the rest of the transport.

Then there was the time that three of us took a trip to Phili... all was well untl the ride to the airport. The driver understood "airport", but couldn't comprehend Terminal "A", "B", and so forth. We had to make a second pass into the airport entrance, pointing out the exit for him so we could make our flight. I don't miss traveling at all.

I videotape and voice record when I'm in a cab.

I'm sure not all cab drivers are crooks and thieves. Sure. I believe that.

They really behave when they know they are being recorded.
