Because, historically, words have led to pogroms.

Pogroms were hardly spontaneous uprising of the peasants and poor villagrs against Jews. Virtually all of them were organized by the local nobility as a means of destroying any place of honor, authority, or economic power Jews might have achieved in the community.

It's not the words of drunks that Jews had to fear the most; rather, it was the orders of the lords to their minions to rouse the mob.

Those were always stone, cold, sober words!
