The filme 'The Passion' is a fictional recreation of an actual event. Mel Gibson can never taint the trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
His talents as a producer/director have given me a new perspective and some mental images upon which to draw. Other than that, he is of no consequence to the actual Passion of the Christ.
Mel Gibson, the person, the producer and director, has some serious personal issues to straighten out. I hope he gets them fixed.
Ironically, I'll say something that you would say...I don't think many people here think it's a big deal.
Has he been to trial and pled guilty? If so that was the fastest case on record.
He made a statement apologizing for what he said. He didn't say, I apologize for what I alledgedly said, but we'll wait for my trial." He was driving 80MPH, intoxicated, in a 45MPH zone...do you doubt that too?
Uh, yeah, Hildy, I do live in this country. What exactly is your point?
Sensitivity Training is simply "re-education" for the socialist mind-set. Uhoh, I've said something that's offended someone's tender little feelings, I better go spend 12 hours listening to some collectivist drone on and on about what I'm not supposed to say.
People have freedom of speech, dear. Do YOU live in this country? You sound like a liberal on this topic.
Nah I just wanted to follow the outmoded custom of due process rather than an on-line lynching.
ONE MORE TIME...I posted a vanity asking what his punishment should be...it was a wish list...but there's no denying that in this country people ARE forced to do things when they act in a bigoted way. I'm not saying I agree with it. In fact, I DON'T EVEN THINK HE SHOULD APOLOGIZE. How do you like that?
Oh, please...we do it all the time. It's going to have no effect on what happens to Gibson. It's a news story...we discuss news stories here. Can't believe after almost 10 years, that still has to be explained.
I agree with you on this. There are people from another race that I have had problems with. If I were drunk I might say I hate all people of that race, even though I really don't. Also, I have never been drunk, but assume that being drunk might feel almost like a dream state? I know people who have done and said some really weird things while sleepwalking (myself included).
First of all it's not in my "littany" -- I've only mentioned it once. And secondly, wasn't suggesting Mel speak out directly against his father (which we agree would be something that "violates human fundamentals"), merely that he distance himself from holocaust denial statements in general. ...whether those statements were made his dad or anyone else.
HIS business...
Your title didn't say discuss what he did, your title said decide on his punishment. Well entering in lynch mob the spirit of the thing, IF he is found guilty at his trial, and I believe that you have to go to a trial on DUI, then whatever the customary punishment is for anyone found guilty of DUI. As far as his alleged remarks, they are not illegal in this country (yet) and should not be punished in any manner.
I knew that. I wasn't talking about his father.
I'm bitter about this because my wife and kids are Jewish, and I've defended Gibson in the past. Now I look like a fool or worse.
GULAG!!! :P
That's exactly where I'm coming from as well! I defended this guy to my family and friends (Just ask Veronica!!!). I'm sorry I misunderstood your comment.
Excellent post.
Yes, it wasn't directed at you, but at him. I'm sorry I didn't make that more clear.
"Freedom of speech means you have the freedom to be stupid."
How much freedom of speech you enjoy depends on who you insult.
Just my opinion: Gibson should get the same punishment as anyone else would get for drunk driving. He shouldn't be LEGALLY punished at all for his tirade. I'm opposed to hate speech laws. They're wrong in principle, and we also know they won't be equally enforced. He was right to apologize, though, because what he said was disgusting and ludicrous. In the future, people will take his ignorant tirade into account when judging him and his work, and that's something he'll just have to live with.
