What should Mel Gibson's punishment be? (VANITY)
July 30, 2006 | Hildy

Since so many here want so much to forgive Mel Gibson for his anti-semetic tirade and beligerent behavior towards law enforcement I was trying to come up with the best punishment. I think I got it. Besides the obligatory fine, I think the Judge should sentence him to 500 hours community service at the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust. What do you all think his sentence should be?

"ALL IN MY HEAD."

You're hearing things. I never said that.

I'm just asking you to tell me why you think (or know) why the Jews have been persecuted throughout history. You said that they have been persecuted throughout history. I just ask you, "why have they been persecuted". The persecution seems so wrong to me. I just want your answer.

If you don't want to give it, fine.

I have a real problem with punishing him for his anti-Semitic remarks no matter how deplorable those remarks are. He has freedom of speech and that includes the right to say foolish and hurtful things.

Bears repeating

Mel=Meltdown

Drinking will do that to ya. Maybe he can start a foundation of some sort to try to make up for it.

Do I hear a second? Gibson should depict Mohammed in an epic.

That WOULD take some stones.

Absolutely. Am I the only one who is more concerned about his drinking and driving than what he said while drunk? His actions seemed to have gotten lost in all the "hate speech" rhetoric.

...and I don't understand why Jews get so upset when someone says something that is negative against them.

Another very good statement.

What ever the states DUI punishment would be. As far as what he said, I still hold the antiqued freedom of speech view. I don't think we should expect to hold our freedoms if we deny them to others.

He should be punished for the drunk driving but nothing for his speech.

That's a good idea. I said last night that, like Paul Newman, he perhaps could open a few "camps" for underprivileged kids to visit to get them outdoors and get them to know nature. Seems good to me.

How many people have to go to sensitivity training etc for the things they say.

Too many. What ever happened to that freedom of speech thing?

Hey, aren't you the one who said he had a more than a few drinks with Mel Gibson himself?

For real?

Foxman's anti-Christian screeds wouldn't be effective as donation-fetchers if they didn't resonate with at least part of American Jewery.

That WOULD take some stones.

He could do it as a dark comedy, if he so chose. Getting around the islamic phobia regarding depictions might be solved by always having the great prophet's voice emanate from just off-camera (i.e.: "Charlie" of Charlie's Angels). ;-)

You are one sick individual. I would rather have every member of FR kick me in the nuts...than meet up with that.

Since when is free speech punishable by community service?

In the United States of America you are free to be just as wrong as you want to be.
