Germany, the hosts of the 18th FIFA World Cup™, kick off the tournament on Friday against Costa Rica in Munich (LIVE on ABC at 11:00AM ET).

This represents a change to a tradition established back in 1974 which saw the defending world champions having the honour of getting the proceedings under way. The other two teams in Group A, Poland and Ecuador, will fight it out later in the evening.

Woo hoo! Those of us who are soccer-mad are thrilled the day has dawned...just a little more than an hour away.

(The upshot is we raised over $150 for a foodbank from our soccer pool.)

Now if we can precisely guide two 500 lb bombs and take out that murdering scumbag Zarqawi, we OUGHT to be able to zero in on that nutbar Iranian fuehrer Amadjihad if he shows up to cheer on Iran's team this year.

And before the unsportsmanship calls get started, knowing what we know now, is there anyone who would NOT have supported the assignment of U.S./U.K. snipers at the 1936 Olympics where Herr Hitler (that *other* fuehrer) was standing around observing the festivities? ;)

I am so hoping Mossad takes him out if he attends. Fancy Germany being the world stage for that event.

I am currently working on an essay for the Smoky Backroom. I hope to have it done before the Germans kick-off. It will serve as a generic response to the inevitable "soccer is ghey" comments. I will post a link to it here, and encourage everyone to use it as a reply to the trolls instead of getting into the usual BS tit-for-tat.

If you hate soccer so much then don't come in here. Or are you just trying to be jerks?

There's something sadistic about a game which is centered around getting the ball into the goal, but you can't use your hands or arms.

In fact, studies show that playing soccer for long periods of time is enough to cause mental disorders due to overwhelming frustration it causes players.

Why do you think the rest of the world is going boizy-quackers while the United States consistently remains the most productive and prosperous country in the world.

Is there a team power ranking anywhere to check out? Who is favored, etc.?

Everybody is pretty much picking Brazil to win it all, or Germany, since they are the hosts.

Ok - to all you Non-Soccer fans.

This is the worlds largest sporting event - nothing comes even close to the World Cup. It's only one month long - so grin and bear it.

Right - to all my soccer breathren.

Our time has come - our U.S. team is rich in talent, deep in skill, and loaded with potential to reach the deep into the final sections.

GO USA
