Missing in all the debate is the implication of the Selective Service registration question on the IN400 petition for citizenship form.
The Selective Service System is America's proven and time-tested hedge against underestimating the number of active duty and Reserve Component military personnel needed in a future conflict. In peacetime, the Agency is minimally staffed and heavily dependent upon part-time personnel and volunteers throughout the United States to keep viable the Nation's ability to conduct a draft that would be timely, fair, and equitable in a crisis. As a part of that readiness, virtually all men in the U.S. are required to register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. Men must be registered to be in compliance with federal law and stay eligible for student loans and grants, government jobs, job training, all security background clearances, and U.S. citizenship for immigrants.
So are the illegals exempt from SSA registration....?

Legal immigrants to USA and their sons are required to register.....and illegals avoid this....?
So they get to pay 3 years out of 5 in tax, get in state tuition anywhere in US and don't need to register for Selective Service.....perhaps the French sent us a couple of Guilotines with the Statue of Liberty that could be put to good use in Washington DC.
Don't forget that they have until adjudication of their case (years & years down the road) to pay their "fine".
Illegal aliens are supposed to register, so I do hope the Senate made sure not to ding them for that.

Are illegal alien males required to register?
Yes. All immigrant alien males, other than those admitted on nonimmigrant visas, must register, whether or not they have a green card.See also Who Must Register - Chart.

You are looking at this from the wrong side, my friend.
I'm sure, now that it has been broached, that this will become ANOTHER reason to grant citizenship......to meet this requirement.
How can it be constitutional for the feds to order in-state tuition? Why is it any of their biz?
Sounds like Alice in Wonderland........Verdict first....then the trial.
So the geniuses in the Senate decreed that Citizenship comes first then register for Selective Service.....while for legal immigrants non-registration is an immediate barrier to citizenship.

Great comparison. Sure feels like it, too.
Sadly, I recently had to tell myself that, "Nope, this is not a bad dream, it really is happening.
The draft in any form is a mistake. I did 3 years in the Army with draftees like myself. You get the uneducated, drunks, junkies, and all sorts of other misfits. You don't find out about these guys until you have to put your life on the line.
Not the way to run a Army.
No way to run a Senate either...

Remember, boys and girls, a criminal history (or substance abuse, or mental/emotional problems) is in-and-of-itself no bar to elective office. Unless I'm very much mistaken.
And THEN they still get 8 years to pay it.

You are right and in case they are a D its almost a prerequisite..
