This is one of the saddest things I read in a long while. That operator needs to go!
All the comments are potentially accurate. Please, to all, this is the media that is presenting reality. Yes, more 911 calls should be responded to. Yes, the operator should get hers too.
But... the article conveniently states nothing about the cause of death. She may have been dead when the child made the call. It takes about fifteen minutes, if I am lucky for the cops to respond to a call in my neighborhood. If she had a life threatening issue, which she did, then would she have been alive when help could have arrived?
And...yes, I hope this type of incompetent handling does not happen to anyone else, but what do you expect from the government. And... why are we all knee jerk reacting to a probably liberal media article.
"In My city there is a law that each 911 call has to be investigated..granted it's not a big city..but I've been embarrassed twice this year because my home number is very close to 911..and I messed up only to have a cop stop by the office..."
So your number is what then, 912?
Ya thats the ticket!!!...OK so I have FAT fingers!!!LOL
Bull$h!+.
"I know that operator. I know that she is a very good operator," said Harris. "She is very thorough."
More bull@h!+.
This operator should be released from her duties. She is incompetent to be serving as a 911 operator. Period. One death because of this kind of stupidity is simply inexcusable.
"That operator needs to go!"
Sure, Millee, after 5 more disciplinary actions, she'll get a hearing. Then a reprimand. Then a raise.
I echo another poster's sentiments here:
&%$* Unions!
The kid is quite believable in spite of his youth. This is horrible. :(
There's no excuse for this. While the dispatcher may have had prank calls earlier, this young boy told her that his mother was unconscious. She should have sent someone. No amount of prank calls shifts the blame away from her.
Grammar check, too! ;-P
Unbelieveable.
The operator should be fired.
The real blame lies with this operator, who should be fired.
The operators are unionized.
No. This operator is not a good operator. Maybe once, but not any more. Time to go 'bye 'bye. - Poor child. He did all he could, and the OPERATOR let him down. Pray for this baby to be healed of the guilt of NOT BEING ABLE TO GET THE operator TO TAKE HIM SERIOUSLY. From the transcript, it was not for lack of trying.
Tragic!
This kid needs a medal (AND $10M straight out of the union coffers)!!
Oh, I pray for that poor baby!
He did everything right...everything he could have done to save his mother's life.
He was punished by a 911 operator who judged him by the actions of wrongdoers, and his mother died.
I pray the obvious lessons have been learned by the operator, the kids who think 911 is a fun prank target, and the parents who should have taught their children as well as the dead mother taught this little boy. I hope fervently that their irresponsible actions reap the justice deserved. But....
Now THIS is UNION power ladies and gentleman! Let someone die and still keep your job and benefits!
My 6 and 8 year old grandchildren ride the school bus to my home until their mother picks them up. This year I told them where the extra house key was hidden on my back porch and made sure they could use it to open the door. I also told them that if they saw me and couldn't wake me up to call 911. We "play practiced" what they would tell the operator.
Then I told them we would have a drill sometime during the school week and it would be pretend.
So, they get off the bus and ring the front doorbell since I had locked the doors. I could hear them murmuring as they walked to the back porch. They found the key and came in to find me stretched our on the couch. They shook me and I wouldn't respond. The eight year old granddaughter seemed befuddled and upset, but the six year old grandson went and got the portable phone and pretended to dial 911. He said "my grandma won't wake up". At that, I got up and complimented them.
But, I guess it would be all in vain if our operators did not take a call from a six year old seriously.
Are we in France, can anyone get fired for incompetence nowadays????
Oh wait, I forget, this is a gov't job. Best job security in the land.
