Citizens of Detroit, and by extension Michigan, open your checkbooks.

That is terrible.

My theory is, if someone says something like "I am having a heart attack", NEVER take it as a joke, even if they have joked about it before. If they are joking about it, punch them in the nose and tell them they are stupid.

Never take something serious lightly. This person should have known that.

They do. A few years ago my daughter "accidently" dialed 911 and hung up.

The local Police were at my door a few minutes later. We had to prove to them that she was not in any danger.

My darling chillins did the same thing.

Same results. I was quite pleased with San José's finest's prompt response.

I know that operator. I know that she is a very good operator," said Harris. "She is very thorough."

WRONG! Facts are facts, and this person is guilty of negligence. These government hacks/apologists are pathetic.

In a city where 25% of the 911 calls are pranks, the operator is going to be expected to try and filter some of these calls. I imagine operators who send the police to every prank call are reprimanded and expected to "know better."

Somebody died because a call that sounded like a prank was real. Now every single prank call is going to generate a police response which will further handicap the ability of the police to do real police work. How many other people will die because cops are too busy driving to prank calls?

This is a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation for 911 operators. The real blame needs to be laid on the hands of those who think it is fun and games to make prank calls to 911.

Detroit. Democrat affirmative-action capital of the world, reaping what they have sewn.

"Kimberly Harris, the union president of AFSCME Local 1023"

Maybe this is why they aren't held responsible for their actions.

Where I used to work, one had to dial "9" to get an outside line. Inside extensions were four digit numbers. Certain comedians thought it was funny to leave messages for people to make calls to extension "9911". I wouldn't doubt some idiot fell for it.

"This is one time I hope for a lawsuit, a big one that this little kid can live on."

Robert: "Ugh!" (Hangs up.) <-- This expression of frustration and desperation from a 6-year old is worth $5 Mil, for starters!

What in the world? I thought that they still sent someone out to investigate prank calls?

Some time ago,I was programming numbers into a new phone. I put "911" in,and then pressed the button to make sure it worked...they answered and I hung up quickly, thinking nothing of it.

Five minutes later, the cops were at my door. They came in the house, looked around, and then told me they have to do that "just in case".

I learned my lesson.

Officials said the 911 operator will be disciplined, but because of her years of service she will not be fired.

Of course she wont be fired she only killed a woman thats not a firable offence. Now if she had brought an american flag into the office she probably would be drawn and quartered.

any time you hear people say just call 911 if you are in trouble instead of trying to defend or help yourself send them this story.

That boy had alot of presence of mind just to see if she was breathing!

Between his straight-forward "attitude" on the phone and that fact, seems he just plain has strength of character and doesn't freak out. Unusual for such a young child, but possible, as I can see.

WAY TO GO, DETROIT...
I thought ALL 911 operators were required to send help when requested, even if a little green man requested the help...

The incompetence is breathtaking. What did the 911 dispatcher have to lose by sending over a patrol car? Absolutely nothing. Don't they train these people to dismiss their own prejudices and personal notions so things like this don't happen? The "Boy Who Cried Wolf" defense doesn't cut it.

In my line of work, we are trained to gather information and test results for military contracts and if we falsify or misreport the information, it is a criminal act and we can go to jail. IOW, I can ONLY get in trouble if I lie or if I ignore the (failure) results. I simply have to follow through and report the facts, good, bad, or otherwise.

Why isn't this person instructed to give everybody the benefit of the doubt?! What does she have to gain or lose, either way?!!! She has let down one of the people who are PAYING HER SALARY!

Another 5MIL...this operator had better be toast. And the frickin union rep syaing she knows this woman's heart...BULLSH1T!!! She just told the boy her where her heart is...

"I DON'T CARE!!!!"

Things like this make me wish *I* was a lawyer (fire away)

Another thing, suppose Miss Detroit 911 was caucasian???

RANT MODE OFF!

Kimberly Harris, the union president of AFSCME Local 1023, said more than a quarter of phone calls received by 911 operators are prank calls. She also said that everybody does not express their pain or emergencies the same way.

"That operator could have had five prank calls. Kids calling in prior to that call. And please, don't think that I am trying to make an excuse. That was a tragedy," said Harris.

As if she actually cares. Yeah, tell us another one.

I would have to agree with that. But this is truly sad.

As for this being a 6yo boy - I maybe could excuse the woman because he sounds very mature (not just in attitude, but in voice tone).

Robert had a lot of presence of mind - I just wish he had enough to run to his neighbors after all this, at least.
