Hitting in 56 games straight is an incredible feat... IIRC correctly, after he was stopped (with the help of two great plays by the third baseman) he went on to hit in a dozen or more straight games...

Also... another amazing fact... not only did he get a hit in 56 straight games... during that streak he got a hit against EVERY pitcher that faced him during those games... in other words, if during the game, the Washington Senators used 3 different pitchers against him... he got at least one hit against each one.

Wish he'd beat Pete Rose. Then had it end.

Good effort. For a while I even thought he had a shot. It's one of those records that seem unbreakable.

I don't know if it was an advantage or a disadvantage to have the off-season break. On one hand, He gets a chance to take a break and get away from the pressure of the streak. He ONLY has to come back and get a twenty game streak going.

On the other hand, he had to get back into mid-season form again.

I did not know that thing about DiMaggio and all the pitchers. Pretty amazing.

Look at the attention he got for just getting to 38. Can you imagine what it would be like if someone got over 45 straight?

To me the most remarkable thing about DiMaggio's hitting streak and Williams batting .406 was that they both occurred in the same season.

I know that back in the olden times pitchers had more advantages (higher mound, no performance-enhancing drugs for hitters), but I've always thought that hitters back then were better than today. Far more .300+ hitters, and even though the HRs were less, there were far more RBIs to be had. Another record that I can't see being broken is Hack Wilson's 191 RBI in a season. Likewise, I doubt there will ever again be a .400 hitter. But I would love it for someone to come out of nowhere and prove me wrong.

Hack Wilson's record is almost untouchable. Just getting that many at bats with RISP would be tough enough.

Rush has talked about what it was like for George Brett when he made his run at .400 back in 1980. The media just hounded him. Can you imagine the coverage a player would get today? ESPN would have to break in for every at bat.
