Pacifica Radio in Time of War Peace and War Special

by Matthew Lasar

Anarcho - pacifists created the Pacifica Foundation. In the 1930s they belonged to groups like the War Resisters League and the Fellowship of Reconciliation. So ardently did they oppose organized violence that they challenged the United States' entry into World War II, the most popular war in American history.

They feared nothing, these pacifists - not the camps and prisons to which the government sent them or the jabs of those who condemned their opposition as capricious and immature. They did not even fear that which intellectuals dread most - winding up on the wrong side of history. They believed that using violence to solve problems simply led to more violence; if the violence was to end, they declared, someone would have to stop firing first. That someone was them.

I remember long ago, in the cold war, a hippy friend telling me that if we had no nukes Russia would not attack because we would not be a threat... sound familiar?

Well let's see...the small Eastern European countries surrounding the Soviet Union posed no threat to them...yet that didn't stop them from invading THEM, did it?

I am reminded of Eowyn's words in the Lord Of The Rings:

"The women of my country learned long ago: those without swords can still die upon them!"

Clearly their individual refusal to fight had not accomplished very much. Whatever moral arguments they presented, they had no effective political response to the threat of Nazism. Pacifists had to do more than simply witness their opposition to war, Hill and Finch decided. They had to build institutions that demonstrated as well as advocated alternatives to violence.

Oh, yeah, sure, pacifist clubs sure would have swayed Hitler away from his aggression if they had JUST been sufficiently developed at the time.

that they challenged the United States' entry into World War II, the most popular war in American history.

There have always been those that opposed conflict for one reason or another. There were those that opposed fighting the British because they were loyal to the crown. There were the draft riots in the north during the War Between the States. There was opposition to WWI from those that didn't want to fight in Europe and of course the WWII opposition discussed here.

But, starting in Vietnam, opposition to America, in general, became 'main stream' because the limited media outlets of the day were swinging most decisively and openly towards the left. Patriotism was 'square', communism was 'cool' and the 'main stream' media became invested in American defeat, both on the battle field and at home.

The main stream media's Vietnam legacy of American defeatism has exploded because of their intense and irrational hatred of George Bush.

Today's opposition to our latest war has reached an all time low; Cindy Sheehan meeting with enemies of America, the radical left wing democrats using dirty tricks and lies to subvert the President with assistance from the 'main stream' media, who do not just report the left wing side of events, but actually create 'news' to suit their end game: American defeat.

Today's left wing no longer just oppose America but actively work towards America's defeat by giving aide and assistance to the enemy.
