NEW YORK, March 19 (UPI) -- A New York City man is being held for allegedly strangling his 28-year-old wife, who was found dead in her bed by police.

Segundo Aurelio Ortiz, 36, was arrested and charges are pending, the police said.

Maria Graciella Calle, the mother of two, was found dead in her apartment Friday after her uncle broke down the door because she did not show up at work at a bakery, The New York Daily News reported Sunday.

"He was a controlling guy," said the victim's brother, Carlos Cardenas. "He wouldn't let her go out. My sister was afraid of him."

Police found Ortiz at a cousin's home in Brooklyn Friday.

The couple's children -- 7-year-old Jennifer and 9-year-old Adrian -- have been cared for my Calle's mother in Ecuador, since their mother moved to New York two years ago, The News said.
