Ayla Brown takes a chance, singing current hit on ’Idol’

Stepping out of her comfort zone, Wrentham’s Ayla Brown last night chose a current top 40 song for her third week of competition on Fox TV’s popular star search, "American Idol."

The 17-year-old daughter of state Sen. Scott Brown, R-Wrentham, and WCVB-TV news reporter Gail Huff selected the latest release of singer Natasha Bedingfield, "Unwritten."

In doing so, she admitted, following her performance, she was taking a risk.

"It was a risk, but I think I needed to take the risk because I, first of all, never performed like this before," she said. "I’m only comfortable usually with ballads."

Two weeks ago, Brown chose Christina Aguilera’s "Reflections," and last week she sang Celine Dion’s "I Want You To Need Me."

"I’m having fun with it," she said of her song choice last night. "I just thought I would go for it."

Brown is among eight female vocalists remaining in the running for the "Idol" title. Eight male vocalists are still in the running and will compete for the third week tonight, starting at 8 on Fox.

Audiences nationwide have taken over from "Idol’s" panel of celebrity judges -- Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson -- deciding which contestants stay and which go home. Voting took place for two hours following last night’s show, and will take place again tonight after the men perform.

The judges’ response to Brown’s performance last night was lukewarm.

Jackson said Brown had her "hoop on and all of that," but assessed the risky song choice as just "all right."

Each time I watch it's Mandesa that I like the best. That woman has some pipes.

As a musician, I closely follow A.I. For sure this week, Kinnik will be off. Unfortunately, either Ayla or Lisa will go too. Ayla's performance just was not good last night.

Best was Mandisa, followed by Kellie Pickler and Katherine McPhee. What happened to Paris last night ??? She disappointed too.

I thought Paris was pretty good - better than she was last week. Kinnik should be gone this week. Ayla might be able to squeek through, I don't think the judges like Melissa.

Okay, so as a musician you think Kellie Pickler is good? I'm not a musician and am probably tone deaf, but I don't think she is that good. She's decent, but nowhere near the same league as the others.

And I definitely do not think she is the easily likable girl the judges make her out to be. The more they praise her the more I dislike her.

So THAT'S why she's always seemed to be underrated by the judges, her dad's a republican. ;)

Simon has quite the crush on Kellie, don't you think?

She not only sounded awful she looked horrible, too. She needs to go. As an aside, if you liked her, disregard everything I just wrote. Hahahaha

Simon? A crush on a young blonde? Shocking. But to me, she's really too nice of a girl for Simon. He's usually into the ex-stripper type for a girlfriend.

Ayla was good last night. I listen to her MP3, it's like from an established artist in the radio. If she goes through Top 12 or Top 10, I wonder how long it takes before somebody in the media brings up the fact that her father is a Republican Senator. They know he's a state senator, but so far they didn't say anything. Perhaps they just assume since he's from MA, and having a beautiful daughter, he must be a Democrat...

Is she the one who said 'What's a mink?' last night when he called her a minx?

the bald guy best.

I just saw him for the first time last night and he is by far the best of the guys. He has the whole package, a current look and voice. Sort of a Three Doors Down thing going on with him.
