The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Oh and let me say too that the position of her heels isn't just an arbitrary thing. It's determined by how far down it is before you hit live sole. Her heels might not need to go that far back at all. Only her hairdresser...uh...farrier knows for sure. ;o)

The angle's deceiving too. It's not that far forward, the hoof is angling away from you. The camera's pointed at the ball of ther heel, not the bottom of her foot.

Yeah, I could tell that. That's why I said that it was hard to tell anything about breakover point from that view. I was basing my guess on where it looked like her toe was naturally wanting to roll and it looked like there was a shadow starting right where I put the red dot.

But I'll let you all pick him apart:)

Well, I'll bite. His front toes are too long, but then he didn't look freshly shod either. It's hard to tell anything about their heels when they've got shoes on. You'd need to exfoliate the sole to be able to tell. Now I'm gonna shut up before you all think I'm a crazy know-it-all (if you don't already!) ;o)

LOL:)

This is what I mean. His front toes too long??????? :). I'm desperatly trying to get them to grow longer:). My vet says they are too short. This shoe job is about 3 wks old:).

What does exfoliate mean?

Becky

What does exfoliate mean?

Exfoliate is when you dig out all the white chalky-looking sole and get down to the waxy-looking live sole. That's when you know when to stop cutting.

I think the farrier digging out Tuffy's sole is what has exacerbated the problem to the point of him being unable to walk. According to his x-rays, he has no natural cushion in the sole of his foot so when the farrier starts digging, he's taking away whatever small amount of exterior cushion Tuffy had. I've had other horses you could dig out half their feet and it wouldn't effect them but it doesn't work for Tuffy.

There's a difference between exfoliating and trimming the sole. Exfoliating is when you stop when you hit live sole. If you scratch it and it looks like a candle wax, you don't cut it. If it looks like drywall and easily scratches with a hoof pick, then it's going to come off anyway. If you use the live sole as a guide, you'll never cut off too much.

That really makes me think my farrier is trimming out too much. I watch him and he just hacks away.

Have a good evening and talk to you tomorrow!

My farrier cuts a bit out of Bay's, but since he's in the pads his soles don't wear away at all.

We tried Tuffy in pads but they crushed his heels and made the lameness worse. I tell ya, the more stuff we try with him, the more problems we cause. Hopefully, the strongid theory is right and will solve a chunk of the problems.

Oh...Your the one with the cool ranch in the desert! I love the appy pictures you post. I tried to Move to Henderson a few years ago but never got past the planning stage. Maybe some day we'll manage a vacation home there.

Oh, OK. I'll watch my farrier next time and see how much he trims out. Shoeing is so confusing. I'm going to try to stop figureing it out:)

On a light note. I took a few pictures of Rocky and my rooster. I think they're friends. The rooster during the day is always in Rock's stall hanging out with him. Today they shared a meal:)

It's funny that he would share with a rooster but any other horse came around he'd run him out. :~D

Tiff's Kat is that way, would run off any horse who dared be nearby while she was eating, but would share her dish with a goat.

I gotta get off my butt now and get things done...

Hello all, I am still here, I lurk when I can but am very busy these days. Down here in rainless, dried-out Texas.
