Already ordered my copy of Howie Carr's book "The Brothers Bulger" but wanted to mention that excerpts from the book will appear starting tomorrow (Feb 17) in the Boston Herald. (Can read online at bostonherald.com) Two brothers, one a murdering gangster and one a Mass. State Senate President profiled on "60 Minutes". "With political corruption on one side and deadly force on the other, the Bulgers shared a diabolic and destructive alliance for decades."
"Hello, Howie? My name is Billy and I'm a first time caller..."
"Now, I have no recollection..." (Howie sitting behind Billy's right shoulder)
oops, Sunday Feb 18 is when the excerpts start...
DIE BULGER SCUM!
from an interview with Howie on the book's site:
Q: Your book is pretty serious stuff, but you have a fairly dark sense of humor, are there any funny stories, if so how about one now?
HC: How about the fact that Billy Bulger spotted John Kerry for the phony that he was long before everyone else in America did? In 1987, he told the St. Patricks
Day breakfast that Kerry was mad at Gov. Dukakis because hes running for Kerrys job. President, that is. In 1991, after the first Gulf War, Billy said, It
was touch and go for awhile for John Kerry he didnt know which side he was going to be on. (Hows that for prescient?) Billys the first one to call him JFK
Just for Kerry, and to say, Hes only Irish every sixth year."
Whatever else you want to say about them, theyre smart, especially Billy.
I heard the 60 Minutes report on this tonight. Unless I missed it, they didn't mention a word about Whitey's brothers. Not that I'm surprised by that!
The deal they had with Kevin Weeks, according to Howie,
is that they were not to mention that Howie had a book out!
That was how they got the interview with weeks. It was said on WRKO's Pundit Review, where Howie was a guest, that it was almost checkbook journalism: Play by my rules, and you get me for the interview. Though Howie, yes, did appear (and said he didn't think Kevin "Two" Weeks "had the stones to kill (him)"
Thanks for the info -- that makes sense. I kept on wondering, what is the "hook" to this story? Why is this being publicized now? And it was only when I did a search on the freeper board that I even found out that there was a book on the Bulger brothers. Anyhow, I found it interesting in that they talked about how Whitey had various govt folks on the payroll, but never mentioned a word about his brothers.
