On January 27, Fred Barnes, on the Diane Rehm radio show, told Diane that he would get back to her by January 30 with his source(s) for the story about Bush volunteering for Vietnam. Did anyone listen to the January 27 show? Did Fred get back to Diane? What was the outcome?
No, but he DID volunteer for vietname under a program called "Crystal Palace" or something like that.
Then the US won air superiority so there was no need for a single role air to air combat plane like Bush flew.
He was too close to the end of his service to make it worthwhile to retrain him to fly another plane. Thus, he never went.
PS - I hate Diane Rehm.
