Rodeo folk steer clear of gay cowboy movie

Johnny Cash lives large at the Stock Show.

While the Academy preferred the gay ranch hands of Brokeback Mountain, the bareback bronc riders at the Stock Show rodeo said they thought the Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line was robbed. It secured only five nominations, which did not include best picture.

"I loved that movie -- it was really good," Isaac Diaz, of Vernon, said of Walk the Line.

Others praised Joaquin Phoenix for his portrayal of the Man in Black. Phoenix is nominated for Best Actor.

"I thought he did a good job of acting," said Chad Mask of Amarillo. "Johnny Cash is the pimp."

But change the topic to Brokeback Mountain, which received eight nominations, and the demeanor of these rodeo riders shifts completely.

"I just can't believe they made a movie about that," Mask said. "Whether it's a good movie or not, I'm not going to go see it."

In the dressing room outside the arena in Will Rogers Coliseum, none of the 20 or so riders would admit to having seen the movie.

But whether you're a gay ranch hand or a macho rodeo rider, the legacy of the Man in Black casts a shadow over all assumptions and stereotypes.

Bono, lead singer of U2, wrote in the liner notes to the career retrospective album The Essential Johnny Cash: "Every man knows he is a sissy compared to Johnny Cash."

Even non gay sheepherders are held in low esteem by rodeo folk (unless they are biblical in nature). Though there is an increasingly popular sheep dog competition in some rodeos.

"Johnny Cash is the pimp."

So he's not "the bomb" or "sick" anymore?

How's this for big-minded: When Hollyweird makes a flick about masculine Interior Decorators, I'll be first in line to see it.

Love the snide implication that at least some of them are lying.

IOW, they're all a bunch of closet homos.

And the press wonders why they get a bad rap.

I'm sure that Will and Grace is wildly popular in cowboy country too.

One good thing about sheep is that you'll usually find border collies nearby. Those are amazing, smart, talented dogs -- they're a joy to watch as they work.

Whenever I see a border collie, I'm always happy someone else owns it. I could never keep up with that breed of dog. A couple of years ago I believe a border collie beat all the retreivers for the title of the nation's longest water jumper or big air dog.
