Star search: Why so few Cowboys in Hall?

By Brad Townsend

Many Cowboys fans are among the suspicious. They believe that only bias and conspiracy can explain the relatively paltry number of Cowboys in the Hall of Fame. No franchise has won more playoff games (32) or played in more Super Bowls (eight), and only one other team has won as many championships (five). But only five Cowboys players are in the Hall.

No Cowboy has been elected since Mel Renfro in 1996, but that could change Saturday. Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin and Rayfield Wright are among the 15 finalists. Bylaws dictate that three to six former players get elected annually.

The conspiracy theory isn't limited to fans. Even selectors talk about it.

"Yeah, of course people have had bias against the Cowboys ever since the America's Team [expletive]," says Sports Illustrated senior writer Paul Zimmerman, a longtime Hall voter.

It would seem to be dead solid perfect that there is a bias against granting members of the Dallas Cowboys into the NFL Hall of Fame.

How else can Bob Hayes, Lee Roy Jordan, Chuck Howley, Cliff Harris, Charlie Waters or Rayfield Wright (to mention just a few) not be in the Hall?

Okay, Cowboy haters, take your shots...

I've had a bias against the Cowboys since Drew Pearson pushed off on Nate Wright in the 1975 NFC Championship Game :)

But that said, I am surprised that more Cowboys aren't in the Hall. We had the same problem with the Vikes, but since they won only one NFL championship and no Super Bowls, it's perhaps easier to understand.

It took nearly twenty years to get the NFL's all-time leading interceptor, Paul Krause, honored. It also took too long for Carl Eller (25 years) to get the honor that was his due. Fran Tarkenton also didn't get in on the first try, and since he revolutionized the quarterback position on the way to setting a number of records, that was a shame too. One of the best defensive tackles of all time, Alan Page, needed seven years.

Okay, Cowboy haters, take your shots...

That would be me. OK, here's one I like:

HOUSTON TEXANS INAUGURAL NFL GAME, SEPTEMBER 8, 2002:
(That would be their first NFL game ever)

RELIANT STADIUM, HOUSTON

Houston - 19
Dallas - 10

I was there. It was sweet.

Hey, if the Ref didn't see it, it is a touchdown!

That side, Drew Pearson, is another Cowboy who deserves a place in the Hall.

And you are correct that the Vikings count there is low due to only one NFL championship and no Super Bowls wins. Yet I think I heard several current Vikings are going into the Party Boat Hall of Fame...

Nobody seems to recall that "America's Team" was something bestowed on them by NFL Films, and wasn't something dreamed up by the team.

Didn't NFL films offer it to the Steelers but they turned it down?

I think it was a bad all BUT I don't understand why there weren't more Viking DB's around the ball.

45,000 fans and a linesman saw it. Unfortunately, the one guy with a penalty flag didn't call it, which was the problem. :)

Party Boat time is over. Tice is (finally) gone and the coddling culture that created such an embarrassment will hopefully be remedied by Coach Childress.

The ownership wants a new stadium and the best way to get it is to not let the inmates run the asylum.

Pearson probably has the cred to get in the Hall. I don't think Irvin does, but if Drew does get in, perhaps they can include a picture of the prone Wright lying next to his bust in Canton. :)

I remember that night some fan had a sign that said "1-15 is fine. Just win tonight."

"...only one other team has won as many championships (five)"

Um...WRONG!!

NFL history did not begin with the NFL expansion that included the Dallas Cowboys. Green Bay, Chicago, and NY Giants all have more NFL championships than the Cowboys. And the 49ers and Redskins have as many.

Most NFL Championships: Green Bay Packers 12, Chicago Bears 9, New York Giants 6, Dallas Cowboys 5, San Francisco 49ers 5, Washington Redskins 5, Cleveland Browns 4, Detroit Lions 4, Pittsburgh Steelers 4.

Sure, Allegar, sprinkle on the sugar...

And drop a ton of salt in the next post (10)! Are you picking up bad habits over there?

Shut up Bender! The Tigress has a right to chuckle... Don't you, kid?

There were some great signs that night.

My favorite was:

"Hey, Jerry, Need a New Stadium?

The Astrodome is Available."

I was hoarse for two days after that game from all the "Wooooohooooooo"-ing.

Oh, and the taunting we gave the Cowboys fans as we left the stadium. ;-)
