Fox News: Spielberg's 'Munich' Is the Best Movie of 2005
Fox News ^ | December 6, 2005

I don't know which is more amazing: that Steven Spielberg managed to make the best movie of the year in just four months or that it's his second huge film of 2005.

Either way, "Munich" is a poignant political masterpiece that will no doubt be very controversial. It's the best movie of 2005, coming in at the last minute to best other terrific entries including "Walk the Line," "Match Point," "Capote," "Mrs. Henderson Presents," "Good Night, and Good Luck," "A History of Violence" and even "Memoirs of a Geisha."

"Munich" is "inspired by real events," those being the 1972 murders of the Israeli team in Munich during the Olympics and the fallout that followed. The filmmaker says inspired by and I will take him at his word. There is not going to be anti-"Munich" campaign in which factual details are matched up to the movie's sequences. This is not "A Beautiful Massacre."

It's certainly mind blowing in many ways that Spielberg made this movie at all. He released his popcorn movie of the year, "War of the Worlds," in June. He didn't commence work on "Munich" until July 15. The final scene was shot, I believe, around Sept. 22 in New York with Geoffrey Rush and Eric Bana.

That's not much turn around time. And yet, as far as I can tell, there are no huge mistakes in "Munich." Even the music is from 1972 — Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine" and Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" are from that year. The movie's look, from the sets, props, costumes and hairstyles to Janusz Kaminski's tinted cinematography, is also vintage.

there was a documentary film (I forget the title) about this incident made years ago - very good, showed the incompetence of the german security forces.

what is the thesis of the Spielberg film? does it tell the true story?

I was just in Munich for 5 days, two weeks ago. The tour guide on the "walking tour" that I did kept telling us that Munich was not even filmed in Munich. Trivia of the day...

> "inspired by real events,"

Translation:
"not faithful to actual events"

Of course, I'm boycotting Hollywood movies until 2038,
and won't see this regardless of accuracy. Money to
Spielberg is as apt as not to end up in Howard Dean's hands.

I wonder why? A movie that shows those scum for what they actually are. I'm sure that once its released CAIR and their fellow scum will accuse the movie of being hateful and racist. This movie is sure to be boycotted.

EEEEgad, not that Superfly look? Hated that era with the wide ties, bell bottoms, long frizzy Isro hair, side burns, high heeled boots, yecccch. But, I'll probably watch it.

I'm worried about this one. America-hating playwright Tony Kushner wrote the script, and Spielberg's a Hollywood lefty with a soft-on-terrorism agenda.

I loved that doc and bought it..my son did a great paper on it in HS. I fear this movie wont compare as it will be somewhat sympathetic to the terrorists.

Three Days in September? Two Days in September? Something like that..... There was also an earlier movie about the Israeli efforts to track down the terrorists, called SWORD OF GIDEON I think.

Admittedly I don't get out much as I used to but a couple of these I haven't heard of at all and the rest are of the art-house variety. Who is the author?

If CAIR actually boycotts it, I will be sure to buy tickets again and again!

I will not patronize any movie that has traitors like Tony Kushner or Oliver Stone as a screenwriter.

Spielberg supported the Iraq policy so I doubt he would find much in common with Howard Dean at least in that area.

It's got no chance to win the Oscar against "Bareback Mountain."

Spielberg is all about "peace" and ending the cycle of violence, blah blah blah with this movie. Funny how he didn't have such peace and love in his heart when it came to his stalker:

Steven Spielberg's convicted stalker is going away for a long time.

And that's just how the filmmaker wants it.

Spielberg was in a Santa Monica, California, courtroom today to ask a judge to levy the stiffest possible sentence against Jonathan Norman, the man who wanted to rape Spielberg and hold the director's family hostage.
