3 arrested in paintball spree

Nine people were taken to a hospital Tuesday after they were shot at random with a paintball gun, said Syracuse Police.

From 8:42 to 9:15 p.m., three city residents drove around in a green Dodge Intrepid shooting paintballs at people, said Sgt. Tom Connellan. Robert Cohn, 21, of 601 Kirkpatrick St., and Duane Mike and Wayne Mike, both 16, of 208 Thurber St., were arrested after police witnessed their last attack, Connellan said.

The first attack took place at 406 Wolf St. and injured four people, police said. The extent of their injuries was not known Tuesday night.

The second reported attack took place at Byrne Dairy, 1429 Butternut St. The three entered the store and began shooting, police said. No injuries were reported.

The young men then drove to Wolf and Salina streets, where a man was struck in the eye with a paintball, Connellan said. Later, they shot another victim in the arm while he was standing in the 100 block of Court Street, Connellan said.

The next report came from a man who had been shot near Grant Boulevard and McChesney Park Drive, police said.

At C&C Market, 420 N. Salina St., a man was hit in the leg and a window was shot out by a paintball.

Police officers near 400 Danforth St. then saw the three young men shoot a man several times in the back, officials said.

Cohn and the twin brothers were taken to the Police Department, where they were charged with second-degree assault, a felony; first-degree reckless endangerment, a felony; and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor.

Police said there could be more victims. Early this morning, police were speaking with a man at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center who reported being hit by a paintball.

Police are still searching for another suspect and another paintball gun.

Anyone with information is asked to call Syracuse Police at 442-5222.

A couple of years ago we had some local kids pull some similar crap. The geniuses chose to videotape their fun and passed out the videos to friends.

You're a moron if you think being shot in the face (and the eye) won't warrant a trip to the hospital.

These bastards are in dire need of a near-to-death beating.

Several years back a friend and I were paintballed while driving down a residential street. The chase was on, after two blocks the little, whimpering, out of breath, 13 year old culprits were apprehended. The police were not amused. It's all fun and games until you screw with the wrong people.....

I really like to paintball my self. But all who have paintballed know that if you turn the guns up and go shoot people who are not prepared they may have a reasonable thought to go to the hospital.

They also do not state the exact ages of the people but if you shoot a elderly person they generally have more delicate skin and bruise and bleed more easily. A paintball traveling at over 300 FPS can do some harm to some people.

These idiots had no concern except their own pleasure. Oh and by the way these are also the same idiots that would go cry to a field owner that someone is shooting "HOT" and it hurt. They choose not to shoot on a field cause they are P*ssies and like criminals they don't like when the opponents shoot back.

Now I have to go take my medication. THX

note how it says "2 people were shot in the head/eye" it did not disclose the injuries to all 9,which leads me to believe there is a spin in effect

It's not that hard to adjust the pressure in those guns to dangerous levels. There must be a reason the fans of this sport in legitimate venues where heavy clothing, face masks, etc.

Since they were able to break a window, I suspect they did some tinkering with the guns.

Of course guns are bad and villians didn't mean to hurt anyone. It was the guns fault.

I would like to state that when this game is banned only the idiots that "play" this way will be resposible. The police have already banned this game at one of our "public fields". No one really used this section of public land until paintballers used it. But now that a few idiots acted carelessly we are not allowed there.

I was watching that the other day on the show called The Dumbest Criminals. When these punks ran into the store to shoot the people it would have been great if they were caught by a few customers who beat them to a pulp.I can understand teenagers pulling stupid pranks but they cross the line when they involve hurting people physically.

When it happened here we were assaulted with an endless string of newspaper editorials from the kids families and friends telling us what wonderfull boys they are.

I think at least 3 of the 5 involved got jail time out of the deal. Along with paint balls they threw fruit, bottles of urine and even injured a mail carrier with a can of frozen orange juice.

One family even tried to sue the school because they kicked him off the football team when he was expected to get a football scholarship. I'm happy to say they lost all of it.

when me and my friends play we dont play in arenas we go out to the woods in the middle of nowhere wearing full BDU's and paintball armor,

and i dont think they needed to tinker with much considering that most paintballs go at what? 300-400fps? i think that house windows or car windows would probably shatter if hit close enough,

My opinion

Then what are you doing?

I have no sense of humor about this. My wife was driving home from work one night, and was hit in the side of the head by a paintball that came through the open driver's side window . She momentary lost control of the vehicle. Luckily she only "bumped" into the curb. She was quite upset for a few minutes. The car was hit by two other paint balls on the driver's side door.

Being hit in the head/face could easily lead to a trip to the hospital.

Being hit while driving a car could easily result in an accident - leading to a trip to the hospital or worse.

The shock/surprise to someone with poor heart health being hit could easily lead to a trip to the hospital or worse.

Someone brandishing a paintball gun saying "paintball rulz" in front of me could easily lead to a trip to the hospital to the paintball gun removed from their @$$.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com i've been shooting since May/1984 and i've Never, EVER seen a field that will let the guns shoot 400FPS!!! 300 was the max for big guns, and that's WITH protection. since 1984 i've Knocked OUT two people and sent three to the hospital for stitches, and they ALL came to play... it's not that hard to hurt civilians.

Sound like you are condoning it.
How about I come by and shoot you?
They could have hit someone in the eye and blinded them.
There is no need for the bastards to do what they did.
There is no excuse what so ever for one human to assault another for no reason.
Being a cyclist I have to put up with crap from a$$holes like this all the freaking time.
Sorry to rant but it kind of pisses me off that you take such a cavalier attitude about one person assaulting another.
I'm sure if it were a dog that got shot the response to this would have been completely different.

I can sympathize with your wife, I'm glad she is OK.
That person who is "Not Condoning it" doesn't know what it's like to be assaulted suddenly by these Paint ball Morons.
they run around in the woods like frustrated soldiers wearing all their padding and helmets and eye protection.
When someone walking down the street minding their own business gets assaulted they ask "What's your problem?".
I guess everyone on the street should be wearing padding and eye protection.
Its everyone Else's fault in the world, not theirs. "Those stupid, stupid people shouldn't have been walking down the street."

I'm confused now. If you find it hard to believe that 9 people needed to be hospitalized, why do you bother wearing BDU's and armor?
