Cell Phone Numbers & Caller ID
self

Posted on 09/06/2005 5:05:43 PM PDT by hsmomx3

I've been having this ongoing problem with T-Mobile since February and am curious to know if any of you have had this happen.

We signed up for TM in late February and have had pretty good service. However, when we call someone, someone else's name shows up on their caller id boxes!!

I have contacted TM many, many times about this but they say all is correct on their end and for me to call the local phone companies and tell them this is a landline caller id issue.

When I do that, of course Qwest and Cox tell me this is ridiculous and there is nothing they can do.

How would you handle this as it is annoying!!

TOPICS: Miscellaneous
KEYWORDS: callerid; cellphones

ask to speak with a Supervisor...

CallerID is only reading what the cell sends to it, nothing more.

Yep, I've done that several times and I've written them as well.

They also check with other departments and they all seem to think all is fine but it is not.

interesting...

but let's realize you aren't probably talking with a TMobile technician, but rather a contractor in a call center.

that story about it being a problem with the phone companies is bunk.

I don't know what I would do. Go to a TMobile store maybe?

I would point out to them that Cingular and Verizon both seem to know how to send the right Caller ID. And they (Cingular) even know how to change it with just one phone call.

Talk to a supervisor and tell them that you will have to cancel your account if they can't get it taken care of!

I'm having a problem with a Verizon phone. When a call comes in, it will ring fine. About three calls later, it doesn't ring in, but goes directly to voice mail. We've had the software updated and the phone checked and no one can find anything wrong with it.

They work on it, and it works fine for about two or three calls and then goes back into the mode where it sends the call directly to voice mail. Anyone know what could possibly be wrong.

It's got the tech's puzzled, but I figured since FR is the source of all wisdom, surely someone here could figure it out.

Sounds like a 'system' issue; like a bug in the MTSO 'switch' or in the cell site (you would not believe how many micros they emply in one of the call sites alone!) - upgrading the software in your phone isn't going to do squat until they get the bug in their software fixed.

I recall stories where they 'backed out' a whole software 'load' on a DSC 'switch' once upon a time on a system that was running Motorola equipment in order to colve a bunch of funny 'bugs' they were seeign after loading the new switch software.

I've always understood it to be that the cell company forwards the number, the caller id provider provides the data to go along with it. Guess I'm wrong.

Actually, all the advise given so far on this thread is wrong....

The problem you are having is not with Caller ID but with what is called the CNAM (Caller Name). This information is provided two ways on cellular networks. First, by the mobile phone companies internal database when calling another mobile phone on their network. Second, when terminating a call to another network (ex. local Bell number). When this occurs, there is a chain of custody protocol that is followed by all the carriers in between.

The terminating carrier (local Bell) goes to a nationwide database (LIDB) and "dips" the database. This database contains the names and telephones numbers all users in the North Atlantic dialing plan. Each telephone number has the users name as reported by the providing carrier. Hence, although the CNAM you have is correct in Cingular's database, the CNAM is incorrect in the LIDB database.

Since Cingular is the carrier of record for your number as recorded in the LIDB database, their network people need to change this for you.

Hope this helps!

Why would our other phones work okay though? They are different ages and were hooked up at different times.

I sympathize.

After much around-and-around with Sprint/Nextel, Mrs. F & I finally got our cell phones' functionality straightened out under a new plan.

At least we think so.

You are a genius, I barely understood a word you said.

Telephoning is too complex these days.

I guess this is why my daughter's new phone number says "out of area" now, even though it should actually say my name. I'm assuming it would shake out over a billing cycle or two, but I'll keep an eye on it. Hubby needs to see the name so he picks up the phone.

hsmomx3: check out nevergore's post. Sounds like the real deal.

You don't have to understand it, just repeat it to the right techs.
