Golden Globe winner Ricky Gervais has revealed that writing an episode of The Simpsons has seen one of his biggest ambitions realised. Gervais was invited to write and star in an episode of the US cartoon, which will be screened in the US in March.
"When I first got into comedy it was my ambition to get a joke on The Simpsons," he said.
"Now I've got a whole episode. I can just imagine waking up one day and finding out it's all been a dream."
Gervais' character in The Simpsons is based on David Brent from The Office sitcom.
He moves into The Simpson household with Marge as the family take part in an episode of Wife Swap, while Homer moves in with his wife.
Gervais was invited to pen the episode by Simpsons creator Matt Groening, who is a fan of The Office.
"It was like an audience with the Pope," Gervais said about his first meeting with The Simpsons team.
"They quoted The Office to me and to show them I was just as good I quoted The Simpsons back at them.
"We were slapping each other's backs so hard we were red raw."
The 44-year-old called The Simpsons the best show on earth.
"It's audacious, it's clever, it's got heart," he said.
"That and Spinal Tap are the two most quoted things in the world."
