Sources: D. Lo sleazed his way outta Sox (Red Sox P, booze, broads)

Even though he was the hero of the playoffs and the World Series, Derek Lowe's off-field antics – chiefly his drinking and womanizing – doomed his chances to remain with the Red Sox, sources say.

Lowe, who went to the Los Angeles Dodgers this season after the Sox showed no interest in re-signing him, just walked out on his wife of seven years and their three kids to move in with Left Coast TV sports gal Carolyn Hughes.

The move shocked his heartbroken bride, Trinka, but according to those who know D. Lo, it wasn't entirely out of character.

``He has a drinking problem,'' said Someone close to the ex-Sox hurler. ``And a lot of his problems come when he drinks. And he wouldn't deal with it and that's why the Red Sox wouldn't re-sign him.''

A Sox spokesman declined to discuss the matter. ``I cannot possibly think that we should comment on this issue,'' said team mouth Charles Steinberg.

But for years rumors circulated in Boston about Lowe's carousing, his frequent appearances in area watering holes and his legion of lovelies.

Our MetroWest Daily News colleague Lenny Megliola reports today that Sox owner John Henry was less than impressed when Lowe brought a galpal – not wife Trinka – to a Boston event they both attended last year.

``Lowe was told that the family-oriented Henry would be upset that he'd be so bold as to show up with a girlfriend,'' Megliola reports. But Lowe was unfazed.

``He's a guy, he'll understand,'' Lowe said, according to Megliola, who added that the open cheating was the final nail in the Sox coffin for Derek.

Megliola also reports that last season Lowe turned up in a Central Mass. bar after playing in a golf tournament with another woman who wasn't Trinka.

``They'd entered the bar separately to avoid suspicion,'' Megliola reports. ``Lowe had been drinking before he even got to the bar, and the owner persuaded him not to drive, putting him up in a hotel instead.''

When he was in Boston, Lowe was frequently spotted at the bar at Aqua, and last April, after a particularly pathetic performance against the New York Yankees, he turned up at Lucky's. Onlookers said Lowe got onstage with the Al Vega Trio and belted out an off-key, ear-splitting rendition of ``New York, New York.''

Lowe also attempted to accompany the band on the drums, which went over like a lead balloon.

The Dodgers' $36 million man was bumped from his scheduled start against the Washington Nationals last night, officially because of a thumb blister. But some speculate his personal turmoil was also a factor. He's expected to return to the hill tonight in Pittsburgh.

Meanwhile, it turns out his current companion, Carolyn Hughes, is actually Carolyn Hughes Furbank, Boston College Class of '97, and a native of Belchertown, Mass.

Hughes, who began using her middle name when she got an on-air gig in El Paso, Texas, is a grad of BC's College of Arts and Sciences. She joined Fox Sports Net's ``Southern California Sports Report'' in 2002 as an anchor and reporter. She also hosted FSN's ``Fox Sports Net Across America,'' which was seen locally on FSN New England.

Until her relationship with Lowe came to light she was hosting the L.A. station's pre-game show ``Dodgers Dugout.'' FSN took her off the team beat late last month, citing potential conflicts of interest.

As for Trinka, word is Diane Sawyer and ``Good Morning America'' are trying to score an interview but, at present, she isn't talking. But do stay tuned.

Paul DePodesta, the brilliant Harvard educated MoneyBall wonder boy GM of the Dodgers was dumb enough to give this bozo 9 million a year for four years.

Even without these off field problems he wasn't worth 9 million.

Yeah, he DID get wins in the deciding games of the ALDS (vs. Angels), ALCS (vs. Yanks), and WS (sweep of Cards) but otherwise he was very spotty. I used to call him Derek B-Lowe
because he's blow saves/leads (no rude jokes please!)

Strawman argument - totally irrelevant to the article and doesn't excuse D-Lowe for being a cheating loser. Hope his wife cleans him out in the divorce.

"I have also heard that Kevin Millar takes a few shots before EVERY game...."

Nah, he'd play like a Yankee then.

I wouldn't mind having ARods stats in my lineup.

He is the ONLY consistent Yankee this year...

Does not impress me. A-Fraud has always had stats. What every talented team he has ever played on does not have is a ring. And he is the cause of that little deficiency. He is a cancer. Ask any Mariners or Rangers fan.

I think he will get his eventually.

The real cancer on that Yankees team is both Tony Womack and to a certain extent Jorge Posada, at least that is what I have heard.
