Give 'em the money
July 20, 2005 | self / vanity

I was talking with a clerk at the local convenience store today. He was probably an Arab, but be seems very nice. He and I know each other a little bit.

I asked him if he ever worried about getting robbed. It may not have been a smart question to ask, but I was curious.

He said he was.

This reminded me of when I worked at a gas station when I was in college. The rule there was to give them the money. No argumenets, no heroics.

At that time, it was almost all cash. We wiped the the windows, checked the oil and the tires, and did all kinds of stuff.

There might have been $500 in the drawer at any one time.

It would have easy to have tried to be a hero. Wilbur (the owner) kept telling us never to do that.

Fortunately for me, that never came up.

I know one girl who got a gun pointed at her face while clerking in a bank. She gave him the money.

Ironically, she was the best choice of all the clerks for this. She may have peed her panties, but she could handle it.

Is there a point you're trying to get at?

This is unrelated, but...

I think there is nothing about that gentleman from Idaho which cannot be fixed.

I volunteer to help.

Keith Urban is closer.

While in college I worked at a convenience store. We had mace and a nightstick behind the counter. We were instructed to beat the crap out of any would-be criminal. Thankfully while I worked there we didn't get robbed.

After trade school I worked in a jewelry store. We had a nickel plated DanWesson .357magnum revolver under the counter and a Mossberg 835 12ga.pump shotgun w/ 8 OO buckshot loads in the office. we assumed we were to blow off the heads of anyone trying to rob us. Thankfully while I worked there we didn't get robbed.

I'm not sure of the point of this thread, but I've had some drinks so I'll share. One of my first jobs I had was in a full service gas station. It was owned and run by two brothers. It didn't get robbed all that often (about every five years), but every time it did, the robber always got shot. Either by one of the two brothers, or by their cousin the night mangaer. Anyways, I guess the moral of the story is, don't try to stick up a family owned business.

The son of Wilbur was normally occupied eating cheesburgers in the office. I can't recall him ever doing a lick of work, and I doubt he could have shot himself in the foot.
