A teenager had to be rescued from an avalanche of peas after he forced open an industrial container in New Zealand.
The 17-year-old, and two friends, used a lighter to burn plastic ties securing the shipping container in Ashburton port, reports Stuff.co.nz.
But as the doors opened the teenager became stuck in a chest-high deluge of peas.
Police and ambulance were called to the scene and were forced to use a forklift truck to free him.
He was sentenced to 200 hours community work and to pay damages of £77, half the value of the peas.

That container had to have been loaded from the top. Which means it was an open-top container and the knuckle-head didn't need to open the doors to see what was inside, he could have just climbed to the top.
To: wideawake
Maybe he was only charged half because he peed when he freed the peas.
only the bottom half contaminated

Good point.
In other words, enough food to give something like 25,000 people a sustaining meal is a normal American's 4 days' wages. Sorry, Malthus.
I assume they were dried.
The markup on those things is immense - one pound of dried peas is about $.29c I think.
A shipping container filled with them is probably something like 12,000 pounds of peas. That's like a 100x + markup.
