Speaking as a long-timer, we go through this mess once or twice a year (often right around FReepathon time). People make a big deal of their departures, which in turn spurs a few others to do the same.
Then, in a few months, they'll almost all be back. Many under different screen names, but some at least have the decency to admit they had a change of heart.
