This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Here in Texas people often put a donkey in with sheep or goats. They are as good as a watchdog. They adopt the sheep/goats/kids and protect them against dogs, coyotes and other predators.
Or anything that happens to come along.
We were riding past the fence when the Evil Donkey charged full steam out of the cedar, ears flat, teeth showing, white around the eyes, heehawing with the most incredible noise, stopped at the fence, of course. Melody went bananas.
I hadn't ridden here for a long time so she was very fresh anyway.
She had such a fit --- rearing, running backwards, etc. that I got off her to try to handle her from the ground.
She charged me and knocked me down and ran over me and proceeded to run home.
Now the first whisper of noise from the cedars prompts her to try to do the same thing. It's FUN to get rid of your rider and run home!
We have been working on that.
Melody shares a pasture with a donkey; in fact, my donkey Billy Bray is the Son Of The Evil Donkey, who is actually very sweet, named Sarah (when she's not protecting her goats and kids).
But Melody is still convinced that throwing a fit at the first sight of the Evil Donkey means she gets to dash home full speed. It's taking a while.
Well, I forgot all about the Preakness today.
I got the live thread up, because I like to do that, but I may miss the race ;~D
OK all - we've got the tack all loaded and the horses groomed... We're on our way out! See you all in a few hours!
Congratulations. It sure does look nice.
That's nice that they are side by side - the pictures of the property are nice too.
Oh man, it is hot here today. Mack and I just got back from Blakes baseball game. We went on the bike. I am burnt up:)
Wonder how Hair and ecurbh are doing. I hope it's not as hot there as it is here....thank goodness it is suppose to be cooler tomorrow.
Becky
We're back... loaded some pics already, trying to see if I can get them posted before the horse race starts!
This area had both this young timber and older timber we rode in and out of.
Here's me taking a picture of ecurbh taking a picture of me ;~D
And here we are all done!
Trailering went well, and it was a good ride. It was nice to be on a ride and have just the quiet of us, no one else :~D
The pictures are beautiful.
We probably went 5-6 miles. Enough to get out and get a little sweat, but not too much for a first ride. Glad we turned around when we did... we still felt good, Bay was getting a little winded when we climbed any long grades.
Riding on that greenway was neat. Bay was a little jumpy, like he thought a deer would leap out of the trees at any moment. ;~D
Those are great pictures:). Very pretty. Jenny is here and was looking and said, "Why the he!! do they have coats on?":)
I'm cooking supper, but will come back to visit later. It is nice to ride with only people you want to:)
Becky
Coats and two flannel shirts! It was cold out! It's 58 now, and raining... we timed it just right ;~D
These logging roads are where I would fear Cyn would get ouchy barefoot, but she sure didn't seem to. She was still taking nice long strides on the way back. It'll amaze me if we really never need to shoe her.
That looks like it would be a nice place to take a lunch and a picket line. Ride awhile, break for lunch, then ride back.
We've been talking alot about the weather here in Nevada. Is your weather as usual or really odd this year?
It's got great lunch spots down where those green roads dead end, even grass for the horses!
Great pictures. I'm glad you had a good time. Cyn so expressive:') Ecurbh, are you left handed? I read that most hold the reins with their left and it comes natural to me but my husband holds them with his right.
She turned out to be such a nice horse.
Our weather is pretty normal, we should be getting a lot of rain now, and we are...
Cyn turned out to be a great horse... And there's so much luck in that, you can never really tell how they're going to be on trail until you take them there. She's unflappable and an easy ride. She just goes :~D
