PEORIA -- The smile never left Jon Scheyer's face even as the pain from his sprained knee, cut fingers and sprained thumb was whisked away by the delirium Saturday night.
"This has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid," Scheyer said after leading Glenbrook North to its first state basketball championship with a 63-51 victory over Carbondale before a crowd of 10,110 at Carver Arena. "It is unbelievable. Carbondale thought we were a one-man team, but they found out different [Saturday night]."
Scheyer wound up scoring 27 points to give him 134 for the state tournament, nine shy of the Class AA record set by Marcus Liberty of King in 1987.
But it was his teammates--especially guard Sean Wallis who plays Robin to Scheyer's Batman--who started Glenbrook North (32-2) on its title excursion with its seamless motion offense resulting in back-door layups and wide-open three-pointers in the first half.
"I wouldn't trade my teammates for anyone else in the world," Scheyer said as Wallis scored 15 points while Zack Kelly and Matt Gold combined for 17 points and 14 rebounds. "We're all so unselfish, and nobody has an ego."

"I think we made some kind of history [Saturday night]," Weber said in reference to his all-Jewish starting lineup. "I don't think anyone ever thought kids like that from a place like Northbrook could win a state championship. We knew we had to overachieve, and we did.

Do they have "class Basketball" in Illinois? Seems so many states have switched to it.
They excelled at the Hy-jump.
You mean, where they wear real Basketball Uniforms and not pajamas?
Oh wait, that's "classic" basketball. (I'm sorry, no offense, just kidding.)
If you mean "Class 1A" etc, yes.
I think that's your answer.
I grew up in Indiana and until some time ago big schools and small schools competed with one another. Now they have different "Classes" Big, Medium and small...everything needs to be "fair" for the lil' dumplins
AA is the bigger class, so yes. Just two classes in basketball here.
Where I went to High School in Maryland, our starting varsity quarterback was named Bernstein, and our best basketball player was named Hess. I always thought that was an anomaly. I kinda liked it though.
I want it back the way it was, but I doubt I will see that in my lifetime.
There are two classes of Basketball in Illinois. Which is not bad, considering that Football has 8 (yes, eight!) classes.
I may be slightly biased, but I think Kentucky has the best system. The "major" tournament (The Sweet Sixteen) has no classes. Everyone plays for the title.
However, in January there is the Class "A" tournament which is for high schools with less than 400 students. As a graduate and former player at a high school that qualified under this, my teammates and I really appreciated that tournament. We went to the state Class "A" tournament 3 times when I was in high school. It was a special experience, even though we knew that it couldn't begin to compare with the real tournament.
It was sort of like the "Bracket Buster" games that ESPN has started having in mid-late season for the mid-major college teams. It gives the small schools a chance to showcase their talent as well.
OY
VAY
So how do they vote up there? Is this another "neocon" triumph?
Yoi, double yoi!
Yoi, double yoi!
Sandy Koufax wouldn't play on Saturday in the World Series.
Yoi!
