Man Charged With Biting Head Off Pet Parrot
Report: 34-Year-Old Offers To Replace The Parrot
POSTED: 12:12 pm EST February 7, 2005 UPDATED: 2:40 pm EST February 7, 2005
An Edgewater, Fla., firefighter was charged with animal cruelty after being accused of biting the head off a pet parrot during a pre-Super Bowl party, according to Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
The incident occurred at a party early Sunday morning in the recreation room of the Saddle Club Estates community near state Road 44 and state Road 415.
The defendant, Bruce J. Coates, 34, told deputies that he was drinking alcohol and couldnt remember what happened. He was apologetic and offered to replace the parrot, according to the sheriff's report.
The parrot's owner called the Volusia County Sheriffs Office at about 8 a.m. Sunday morning to report the incident, which occurred at about 1 a.m.
Witnesses told deputies that Coates and several other people were playing billiards. The parrot was on one of the player's shoulder when Coates grabbed the parrot, put the birds head in his mouth and bit it off.
Witnesses said blood splattered on the wall and formed a puddle on the carpet. Coates fled the clubhouse after the incident.
On Sunday, deputies filed a complaint affidavit charging Coates with a felony count of animal cruelty and one count of criminal mischief, a misdemeanor offense.
The Sheriffs Office plans to seek a warrant for Coates' arrest.

"Polly wants a creeecck....."
Won't belong before the Monty Python jokes start. Of course there was a scene in Dumb and Dumber where they sold a blind kid a parrot whith it's head taped on.
No criticisms! The guy was genetically predisposed to bite off parrot heads. The parrot-head biting gene will soon be discovered by researchers at an esteemed university in short order.
I can say without reservation that it is indeed a dead parrot.
Ozzy Python?
This was during the "pre" party?
Sounds like he got little ahead of himself.
I don't know how to post it but go to the kitty ping thread posted today to find a great parrot video. Parrots are sentient but sociopathic. I've lived with two Amazons.
Okay...I'll be the first one to ask...I know we are all wondering...does it taste like chicken?
We only served nachos.
Hmmmm, if *I* had posted a decapitated parrot story to News/Activism, it would have been off with MY head.
No way! Alcohol was involved. I find that hard to believe.
