Well, some new folks like it.
I would much rather IGNORE a dozen pings to threads of limited interest to me......rather than MISS an extraordinary thread -- because nobody pinged me.
My only point was that "ping-a-phobia" is hardly a NEW phenomenon on FR:
Has anyone else been put on ping lists without their knowledge?

Sorry for the vanity, but lately I've been getting put on ping lists that I never asked to be on. I was wondering if this has happened to any other FReepers. Anybody else having this problem?
