I've seen estimates ranging from 100k to 500k... we don't yet know the full extent of the damage, although we have a clearer picture now than before. When it first struck, people thought only 20k might have died.

I kind of wonder about the numbers getting padded based on "we didn't see anyone in that village". How do they explain 500K in shelters? They had to come from somewhere. They, the nameless faceless they, reported that the aboriginal tribes of Andaman and Nicobar must have been annihilated because they couldn't see them near the coast. However, people throwing sticks and stones at helicopters proved them wrong. Because the tribes headed for higher ground.
