Was Lincoln Gay? By W. Scott Thompson Mr. Thompson is a professor at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University.
What drives our great to greatness? We search, and find hope and humanity, unassuageably-remembered hunger, driving fear; but sometimes the mystery goes deeper to presiding emotions unmistakable in their power but strangely indeterminate in their form. In the present case Abe Lincoln passed from death into a demigod of national might and righteousness, and now makes him the canonic hero of liveliest sympathy and spiritual growth. And neither depiction--better still a union of the two--rings false. We examine the powerful and never inaccessible information that makes startlingly clear a great suffering; we see this in turn become the source of power which moves this parched great spirit into worldly greatness while maintaining his humanity; and are forced to conclude that he could never come to personally satisfying terms with the active homosexuality which he sacrificed to prudence and ambition on the threshold of his career. But where he faltered and brought grief to others beside himself in his private life he gloriously overcame in his public life. And this is news still without dignity, unwelcome to most sectors of our society.....

Good Lord....not THIS crap again...
Must've been a log cabin Republican.
I heard he was a Malungian.
Clever. Were they built with lincoln logs?
ok beavus I really shouldn't be laughing at that but I can't help it
Lincoln who?
Seriously, isn't it true that EVERY historical person of the slightest importance was gay?
Men like to spend time with other men, and ditto for women. It is crazy to try to tun this into homosexuality, because at bottom homosexuality is just another name for sodomy.
The answer here is no. But that Millard Filmore guy...he was definitely a flaming gay. Oh, and that Andrew Jackson character...he was a alcoholic. And that McKinely fellow...he was a definite exhibitionist.
You really hit the nail on the head with your commentary--SO well said. I thank you for sharing your insight.
I thought that was James Buchanan...
Seriously, isn't it true that EVERY historical person of the slightest importance was gay? They become gay, once they are dead and it's been long enough no one is able to fight the allegation.
Typical of the activist mentality, anyone is fair game if they can be used to advance your cause.
One thing the muslims have right is their treatment of gays and gay proselytizers.
Wasn't there a report recently about a farmer whose pig was gay? The Left won't stop until every figure in history has been "determined" to have been gay, and that God himself is found to be gay.
This is crapaganda of the highest order.
OK, now I have officially seen EVERYTHING. My head hurts. I am going to bed.
Lincoln was NOT guy, but he was a continental.
guy = gay
Isn't it a little late to be posting articles with sentences longer than, say, 50 or 100 characters?
The article is unreadable stream of consciousness.
I maintain that labels only reduce people to sub-human status. The hypostasization of the erotic, enervates the personal.
Post modernisism is for the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked. The human experience (as it relates to our co-dependency on a societal structure) has now been ruduced to nothing more than a storage bin of impulses and feelings, and never a care nor sacrifice is made except to keep all of our feelings from becoming tangled with one anothers. A clinical attempt to sterilize the human existence and to protect each other from the responsibility of one another.
We are a sick world. It is now normal for a fellow that practices homosexual sex to not only find no fault with but to actually be honored to be known as a "homosexual". As if all that he is and all that is substance to his human identity can only be opened through the prism and index of a sexual behavior.
At that point we have failed to "tolerate" the thousands of other traits that make us human and a person.
We have found the enemy,................and it is us,..........or we,..........or is it them?
CYB
Perhaps the most poorly written and "reasoned" article I've ever read.
Using his five "tests," most men would be gay.
I've now got doubts about myself...
Y'all will have to excuse me, I've got to go find a closet.
Was Hitler gay? It's been postulated.
When I was a young teenager, the word "gay" did not exist. We all used the word, "queer", but we had no idea what it really meant. I know most readers will find that strange, but seriously, homosexuality was not discussed, period. I went to a Catholic High School. The very pretty young girls in their plaid skirts made me straight as an arrow (no pun intended...).
{groan}
Actually, there's more... much more...
Abe Lincoln was not only gay, he was also heterosexual, which is even worse than gay.
Abe Lincoln regularly beat baby seals to death with their own shoes.
Abe Lincoln would regularly pull sapling white pines out by the root as he feared their presence.
Abe Lincoln compared his skin color with others by (some say uncomfortably) glancing at the "backs of hands". If the color was not identical, he would declare, "Well that's nice" a tip phrase to his secret service to make that guy disappear.
Abe Lincoln hated vegtables.
Abe Lincoln would buy expensive pieces of art for the white house so he could burn them before retiring for the evening.
Abe Lincoln was secretly in love with Marx.
...since we're rewriting history
Was Lincoln Gay?
I won't even read it.
Thank you. I hate to bring this stuff up but homosexuality is one of those emotional issues that drive people from rational thought as if some primal force is in play. No matter how reasoned one is they are often called bigoted and slandered as being gay themselves. Conservatives need not hide and wave their bibles to ward off this political and social disease. The information is there to combat it and reasonable people should not bow down to the lies and foolishness of a small activist community who make their choice of sexual behavior a political banner as they lead the charge from hollywood to your living room selling a very onesided and misleading picture of a subculture that is far from benign.
(s) so any guys-night-out is actually a homosexual orgy...(/s)
Lincoln Chaffee?
They have already done that. There is a play called "Corpus Cristi" which depicts the Christ as a homosexual. There is no shame among the Left.
Your tag line is excellent. Except, I would argue the blue cities are nothing more than liberal plantations.
(s)all dead voters are "gay"(/s)
Probably not, but he was almost certainly quite twisted. He had a sexual relationship with his own niece, who apparently killed herself out of disgust with the practices she was participating in.
Not to go into excessive detail, but he was apparently masochistic and fascinated with feces.
Uh, sounds pretty gay to me, dude. You got something to tell the group?
/It's a joke, son.
Yeah, and what was the deal with Teddy Roosevelt and those bears? Sounds pretty sick to me.
A baby seal walks into bar.
What drives so many of our academics to be full of s..t and project early 21st century insanity back on former centuries. Most of this is simply verbose psychobabble with a propagandistic point to make.
That is the irony I suppose. Those that wish so much not to be singled out for their behaviors sexual or otherwise seem all the more to have a need to be defined by those behaviors. I agree the world is sick and the social structure is becoming one that fosters the persistance of the sickness.
Revisionist history strikes again
Oh.....the writer doesn't mean "gay" like "happy" but "gay" like......oh.
Then the answer is definitely yes -- Lincoln was a homosexual. Along with Ruth and Naomi, David and Jonathan, Jesus and "disciple whom he loved," and St. Paul, that whole "thorn in the flesh" thing. And, lest I forget -- the Three Stooges. As my wife pointed out while we were watching them tonight, they always slept together. Even in the episodes in which they were married (to women, that is) the boys always slept together. Hmmm....that can mean only one thing, right?
The problem with this "historian" and others like him is that they have one-track minds. And diseased ones, too. They cannot even imagine strong friendships, even love, between men without those men winding up in the sack. And they cannot imagine people sharing a bed together without there being sex involved, even though that was very common not so long ago, and it was even common for travelers to share beds with strangers if there were no other accomodations in a town. Now, I'm sure that this guy has wound up in bed with strangers countless times, but....
It's pathetic that this kind of intellectual (and it's a stretch to use that word) wanking ever sees a printed page.
Which includes their belief that sodomizing young boys is not gay, and that only the "bottom" is gay?
Exactly my point. Only back then it was refered to as "forking".
I heard Lincoln had an affair with Alexander.
Oliver Stone could make another porn movie about it.
I'm from the cold North, and I can attest to the fact that spooning would qualify as gay. Given the choice, I think 97% of us guys would choose frostbite.
