Press release from Brian Wilson website:

Brian Wilson to Perform His Lost Masterpiece "SMiLE" in the United States for the First Time on National Tour

New SMiLE Studio CD To Be Released on September 28 by Nonesuch Records

Los Angeles, August 6, 2004 -- Following the ecstatic reviews, ticket frenzy and extraordinary audience response that accompanied the historic first-ever performances of the ‘lost’ masterpiece, SMiLE in the U.K. and in Europe earlier this year, Brian Wilson will unveil his much anticipated work in the United States during a month-long nationwide concert tour. The only legitimate complete studio recording of SMiLE will be released on September 28 by Nonesuch Records to coincide with the United States concert tour.

The legendary writer, producer, arranger and performer of some of the most unforgettable and inspirational music in rock history, Wilson will perform with his extraordinary ten-piece band backed by a Swedish strings and brass octet.

In addition to SMiLE, the concerts will include classic Beach Boys and Brian Wilson favourites, as well as selections from Wilson’s recently released solo album Getting’ In Over My Head (Rhino) featuring tracks with Eric Clapton, Elton John and Paul McCartney.

Brian Wilson’s European debut performances of SMiLE resulted in rave reviews:

“Groundbreaking complexity and sophistication…[the concert] made it seem like the grandest of American symphonies and Wilson the national heir to Charles Ives.” --Michael Hann The Guardian (London)

“Nothing could prepare us…the music echoed everything from Philip Glass to Kurt Weill to Chuck Berry…Leonard Bernstein said Brian Wilson was one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. He was not wrong.” – Joe Muggs Daily Telegraph (London)

“Wilson immediately transports listeners onto a transcendent plane…the premiere of SMiLE clearly transformed the vast majority of the nearly 3,000 fans on hand who gave Wilson a five-minute ovation at the end.” Randy Lewis Los Angeles Times

I've never gotten the whole Pet Sounds, Smile, Brian Wilson thing. I've listened to Pet Sounds a couple of times and (flame suit on), it sucks. The stuff I've heard from Smile also generally sucks. Guess I'm just not with it.

I didn't care for Pet Sounds (which I listened to twice before the previous BW tour).

Now I "get" the album. Personal taste is not "good" or "bad". You do not have to defend your choices nor do we.

There are a lot of music critics who find great value in Pet Sounds. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band was the Beatles' answer to Brian Wilson's album. SMiLE was supposed to be his answer. His breakdown got worse and the production costs of Good Vibrations seemed to tank the album.

I dug the Pet Sounds live show (and DVD). I will try to be even closer than 8th row for this one.

I watched the first segment or two. They talked about the Dr. who treated Wilson a decade or two ago. King asked if they sued him. Brian said no. Wife emphatically said yes. Makes me wonder if he still is being lead around by someone. He just during the segment or two I saw didn't seem to be all there.

I saw him on the Pet Sounds tour and reportedly he was still shakey to actually go onstage.

He had a child-like innocence (when a small child says "...Hi"). He played keyboard for part of one song and guitar for part of another but he sang through all of them (although he did restart a song after the first line when he felt uncomfortable with the opening line).

He can deal with a small number of people but certain situations certainly seem to still throw him off.

Then again, how comfortable would you be to be on his show?

p.s. When I met Roky Erikson of the 13th Floor Elevators last year he seemed to be able to handle a crowd of strangers for 2 hours (at a signing/meet and greet). Supposedly just a few years ago he had difficulty even meeting with people he knew (and always had to have tv/radio tuned to white noise "shhhhhhhhhhhhh").

You've got mail. BTW, where did you see Brian? Where will you attend the next concert?

I watched the entire LKL and I don't know
quite how to put this, but I felt really
sorry for Brian... his wife talked about
his mental problems in too much psychiatrist
lingo and didn't seem to try to bolster Brian
or compliment him on his musical and songwriting
genius. I guess I expected her to come across
as his number one fan, and not so much as his
keeper. Brian is a fragile, gentle soul and I
hope he's not only loved, but also that he FEELS
loved.

I watched a lot of that interview, and Larry King does not appeal to me as an interviewer. It was obvious he didn't have the first idea of the history of the Beach Boys, and he kept cutting off explanations. (He does that with just about everyone.) Perhaps he was worried about Brian's reputation for giving one-word and one-sentence answers.

I hope so.
Let me ask you this:
are Carl and Dennis Wilson both deceased?
What about Mike Love, the cousin?

Dennis (middle brother) died around 1983. He drown at Marina Del Rey at his boat dock (drinking may have been involved).

Carl (youngest brother) died of cancer (throat?) around 1998.

Mike is still alive and performs (the beach boys).

A few good websites:
brianwilson.com
beachboys.com
cabinessence.com (click the Brian Wilson link)
These sites have tons of links to other GREAT sites.

GREAT DVD's to have which not only goes into the music but also the story of Brian Wilson:
1) "AN ALL STAR TRIBUTE TO BRIAN WILSON" (Radio City Music Hall). You can see it on my profile page.
2) "ENDLESS HARMONY"
3) "THE BEACH BOYS: AN AMERICAN BAND/BRIAN WILSON"

That last one is a REALLY good deal, because it has TWO documentaries which are good on ONE DVD! And it's CHEAP. It's around $10.00 (got mine at BESTBUY), but I would have gladly paid $30.00. I was surprised they had it so cheap. BTW, The first Documentary on the DVD is older, and I don't remember the name of the second documentary, but it's about Brian.

Thanks.
Is there bad blood between ML and Brian?
Personally, I never liked Mike Love at all.

Lol, the Beachboys tend to sue each other a bit. The REAL bad blood apparently is between Mike Love and Al Jardine. You can read all about it on those sites.

The Beach Boys have splintered into about 3 different groups now. You have the Beach Boys (Mike Love, Bruce Johnston, etc.). You have Brian Wilson (solo). Then you have Al Jardine's band which used to be called BEACH BOYS FAMILY AND FRIENDS (.or something like that). Mike sued Al to get him to stop using the name BEACH BOYS at all.

I think Mike sued Brian for royalties/song rights (Mike didn't receive credit on many of the songs they wrote), after Brian sued a publisher and won back his catalogue. They both prospered from their moves, I think. Long story. Those links will have all that kind of stuff (might have to archive back).
