Bonnie and Charlie

What happens if the two storms collide? I am not sure there is a chance of that but what would happen if they did?

Such events are extremely rare -- and extremely dangerous because of the unpredictable consequences.

Given that the southern part of the more northern storm (Bonnie in this case) is moving east, and the northern part of the southern storm, (Charlie in this case)is moving west, they would tear each other apart, though local conditions might be real bad.

Dogs and cats living together...mass hysteria!

Great answer ;-) Seriesly, there's three things that could happen if they get close to each other:

As Rockingham said, colliding storms are rare and exceptionally unpredictable.

The end of civilisation as we know it...demon-spawned, devil worshippers will roam freely...we're doomed.

Venkman: This city is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions.

Mayor: What do you mean, biblical?

Ray: What he means is Old Testament, Mr. Mayor... real Wrath-of-God-type stuff. Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies.

Venkman: Rivers and seas boiling!

Egon: 40 years of darkness, earthquakes, volcanos.

Winston:The dead rising from the grave!

Venkman: Human sacrifice, dogs and cats, living together... mass hysteria!

They tend to deflect each other - its called the Fugiwara effect. And if one strong is much stronger than the other, the stronger one will tend to shear apart the weaker one.

I hate it when we have biblically proportioned catastrophes...the interstate always gets shut down....avenging angels with swords of fire..gapings holes appear, straight to hell..all that stuff, and probably right when work gets out.

So there would be very little chance of them merging? Their rotation speeds would have to be pretty well matched for that to happen, I guess.

I appreciate all the responses. Its a relatively unique experience to see what would happen.

I think it normally results in one of them following down.

The Fugiwara effect works at considerable distances - hundreds of miles - if you have two hurricanes, say, in the central Atlantic and they start to get near each other, the eastern one will tend to deflect to the north and the western one will tend to deflect to the south. This happened to Humberto in 1995.

Also in 1995, Hurrican Karen diminished to a tropical storm and became much weaker than a nearby hurricane, and eventually became a very small swirl within the larger circulation around that storm.

Two hurricanes can fling one another or absorb it. The Perfect Storm of 1991 occurred when Hurricane Grace merged with an extratropical low pressure system.

That wasn't a hurricane (at the time), and Grace was in the process of becoming an extratropical system.
