S. Frederick Starr's Bamboula! is of interest for the historical background in the US from about 1840 to 1870.

KEYWORDS:
The book is of interest not only for Gottschalk's life but also for the discussion of politics and culture in the middle of the 19th century.
I disovered that, for example, Franklin Pierce ran on a platform of annexing Cuba, that a mob sacked the Spanish Consulate in New Orleans and the there were some attempts to conquer Cuba by force (the filibusters.)
There is also a discussion of social life in the US (and Europe) at that time: slavery, religion, music, etc.

Could this be moved to chat or wherever? It's not really breaking news.

Perhaps this is of interest (the book is remaindered at Half-Price Books for about $3.00.) I found the cultural discussions interesting.

Thank you so much for the book recommendation, Doctor Stochastic! I'm pinging betty boop and cornelis because it sounds like something that might interest them as well.
