I remember before Dec 1968. Almost anyone could get a seller’s license and operate a kitchen table gun sales store.

Back then you could get a gun from a bookstore, pawn shop, hardware store, grocery store, liquor store, record shop, clothing store, gas station, saddle shop, Hat shops, feed store. private dealers in homes. They were for sale everywhere! Cash and carry. No background checks no waiting periods no ATF forms to fill out. Yet the crime rate was very low even though the news papers tried to make you believe it was high and all the problems were with Saturday Night Specials and Imported 5 shot bolt action army surplus rifles rifles.

In 1975, I had a co-wporker approach me as he knew I was interested in guns. He had a poorly printed “catalog” of guns for sale, all types from AR-15s to good quality S&Ws. Cash only. He would not say where the guns came from and I had a bad feeling not to get involved. He disappeared not long after.

Many were closed by Lyndon Johnson and the 1968 Gun Control Law, later Jimmy Carter caused more to be closed, same for Bill (slick Willie) Clinton, Obama went after the ammo to starve guns and their owners.

My first question was, what is an unlicensed dealer? I came up with the same definition you did. Second question, how do they know an unlicensed dealer sold weapons? If I sell or give one to another, I am certainly not going to tell anyone.

Some people, when selling a personally owned firearm to a stranger, will use an NICS check to ensure that they are not selling to a felon. The Virginia State Police often have a table at gun shows to facilitate this. I would not sell to a stranger.

If selling to a friend or relative ... I already know. And as for the po-po ... it’s none of their bloody business.

Thanks. Things used to be simpler when i grew up. Now, I’m just a cranky anachronism.

Not wasted from their viewpoint. It creates a firearms owner registry. One of the primary goals of police state. Secondly it adds another layer of liability to gun ownership. All good things for aspiring tyrants. It’s all part of the loathsome 0bama’s fundamental transformation that is continuing unabated under the equally despicable Biden.

Sell the lot of them to a FFL dealer. You won’t get the best price, but you will be done with them all at once.

Thanks. It’s the safest and easiest. A person pays for convenience (especially nowadays).

Lots of States allow private sales/gifting without involving others for background checks:

Federal law trumps State law.

My kids have no interest in guns whatsoever. I suppose I could just die and let them do whatever with them.

I'd hang on to them. Times are heading down a bad road. If the bottom drops out, your kids might find a new interest in firearms.

That’s true. I think at this point the only one I’d get rid of is a very old antique 22 pump with octagonal barrel about 100 years old. I think they called it a gallery gun. I’ve never shot it. It was handed down to me from my father.

They are specifically NOT supposed to be keeping track of who has what guns...

And here we are.

It is DECADES past due time to end the BATFE. Period. Full stop. Close it down and replace it with nothing.

Federal law without explicit Constitutional authority to exist, and that actually violates the 2A’s express prohibition, doesn’t trump sh*t...

If that were true, we could have gun silencers without a license and $200 stamp and nevermind about bump stocks.

I live in MS - until my State tells me I can’ sell a weapon without jumping through hoops, I’ll sell as I please.
