“Driving an EV is the equivalent of spending $17 dollars a gallon for gas!”

At least argue from a point of fact that sound bite was proven to be false long ago. The “study” came to that cost by including the cost of all the charging station capital expense into the total cost not what the actual cost for the electricity delivered as product.

Today you can go to a Tesla supercharger during peak time and they will sell you a kWh for 43 cents. That kWh will take a 5 passenger sedan such as the model 3 five and half miles down the road. It takes 180 watt hours per mile. That’s a cost per mile of 7.73 cents per mile.

A virtually identical sized S60 Volvo gets 28 mpg under identical traffic conditions I have driven both so these are real world Houston in July A.C. On numbers. A gallon of 93 which the T5 must have was $3.19 today. 3.19/28= 11.39 cents per mile.

So what is the per gallon equal at 7.73 cents per mile? Easy 7.73*28= $2.16

So the supercharger at peak times is putting out the equal to $2.16 a gallon on a equal cost per mile driven basis. That’s no where near $17

From a L2 dryer sized 50 amp plug in the garage you can charge up over night. retail power in Texas is 9 cents per kWh so the same Model 3 goes 5.5 miles on 9 cents worth of retail power or 1.63 cents per mile.

Put another way how cheap would gas need to be for a 28 mpg car to have a 1.63 cents per mile fuel cost. 28*1.63= 45.81 cents PER GALLON so no it is not $17 a gallon that was lying with number shenaniganry.

EVs are not for everyone but as a urbanite commuter car and daily driver they are impossible to beat on a cost per mile basis. Even at peak supercharger rates they are cheaper than retail gasoline today from home not even Saudi Arabia prices can touch the cost per mile.

Mind you this is in a car that costs 25,000 one year old with less than 20,000 miles. My S60 is heavier by curb weight. And cost 58,000 one year old and 18,000 miles so the capex invested in a Model 3 is half a similar sized car.
