The area was Prussian. A much larger area once belonged to the Teutonic Knights.

There’s probably a reason for the similar spelling.

There are lots of ‘sleeping dogs’ in Europe who were often awake and fighting in the past.

‘Prussian’ Teutons weren’t really related to ‘Old Prussians’, who were Baltic tribes. Teutons just borrowed the name.
