Yes, the US is engulfed in a fiscal inferno!
US government debt is now bigger than the US economy. This was unseen until 2012 when debt surpassed GDP for the first time.
In addition to almost $34 trillion in debt from our crazy spending, out-of-control government, we are on the hook for almost $213 TRILLION in unfunded liabilites (promises made to Americans that will likely not be honored).
The sad thing about the US Debt Clock summary is the $632,195 share per citizen of unfunded liabilties. That raises two questions. First, how can California’s Ken doll Governor Gavin “Greasy” Newsom give away free healthcare to ALL illegal immigrants? Second, since the invasion of illegal immigrants began under Biden/Mayorkas, will they be on the hook for the unfunded liabilities which they disordinately consume? Not likely. Maybe we should charge each illegal immigrant $632k admission fee.

Indeed, one can dispute words and their meanings, sometimes to poor results. My wife and I think a bit in a "dart board" metaphor, beginning with God, a next concentric ring being ourselves and family, the next outward close friends and associates, and so forth, the "world at large" being the most outward ring.
For this, private property -- as well as freedoms of speech and self-protection -- is a key conservative perspective.
Consider Walter Williams' "but let me offer you my definition of social justice: I keep what I earn and you keep what you earn. Do you disagree?" Or the centrality of private title as Peruvian economist Hernando de Soto might identify, since conservatism is a human stance, wider that just within our national borders.
The "collective" stands against this, of course, as individual collectivists use that collective con to try to gain access to another's property, assets, savings and so on.
We say we are and act as conservatives, making allowance that our neighbor can hold a differing view, but not to overturn "I keep what I earn and you keep what you earn."

It's like saying you get a cancer diagnosis, and you're not dead yet. Or, better yet, you jump off the top of a 100 story building and as you pass the 50th floor you are heard to say, "so far so good!"

We woke up one morning, read in the news that the Soviet Union, a major world power, was bankrupt. IT HAPPENED THAT FAST.

Conservatism is mostly believing and sticking with past experience and what has worked in the past for hundred of years. They see the world as imperfect but they make the best of it. They also don’t mind trying new things, but they want to do it carefully and slowly, lest they make things worse. They’re mainly live and let live types.
The opposite of conservatism is radicalism. Radicals also see the world as imperfect and unjust, but they want to fix it by throwing out everything that has worked in the past, even if imperfectly, and replace it with their untried, juvenile, wishful thinking, idealistic ideas. Basically throwing out the baby with the bathwater. And they are so driven by such a messianic zeal to do so, that they don’t mind killing a few millions in their ruthless process.
This contrast is perfectly driven home by the great poem by Kipling “The Gods of the Copybook Headings”. I consider it the anthem of conservatism. See what you think.

OK, so you got this cancer diagnosis decades ago, and you’re still alive. What exactly have you done to protect yourself from it that caused you to keep living?
And what about the millions that didn’t do that and they’re also still alive.
